12 more enter school board races

Fifteen school districts across Orange County have been granted extended deadlines to complete paperwork to file for board seats after a number of incumbents failed to file their nomination papers by the Friday deadline.

The Fountain Valley School District, Huntington Beach Union High School District and the Area 5 seat of the Coast Community College District were given three extra days to complete candidate paperwork. Candidates have until Wednesday to file.

The deadline for candidates for the Area 1 seat the Coast Community College, Huntington Beach City School, Ocean View School Westminster School and Garden Grove Unified School district was Friday.

Twelve more contenders have thrown their hats into the ring for the 19 school board seats in the seven districts serving Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley, bringing the total to 31 candidates.

Shana Christina Jenkins, a public affairs instructor, will be running against incumbent Jim Moreno for his Area 1 seat at the Coast Community College District. The district oversees Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa and Coastline Community College, which is based in Fountain Valley.

Retired Federal Judge Lynne Riddle also qualified to run for the Area 5 seat at the Coast Community College District.

Educator Bao Quoc Nguyen and incumbent Lan Quoc Nguyen also added their names to the list of candidates running for the two seats at the Garden Grove Unified School District. The district oversees two adult education centers, 47 elementary, 10 intermediate, seven high, two continuation and two special education schools in Garden Grove and in surrounding cities, including Fountain Valley. Board member Bob Harden, Bob Tucker, a labor relations representative, and Shaun M. Curtis have already qualified.

Educator and business consultant Anji Clemens qualified for the Huntington Beach Union High School race. The district oversees seven high schools, an adult school and two alternative high schools in Huntington Beach, and Fountain Valley and Westminster. Retired teacher Kathleen Iverson, board President Brian Garland, businessman Tom Dern, and board member Bonnie Castrey are also in the running.

James Templin, a public school administrator, and Rochelle Giuseffi, a retired educator, qualified as candidates for the Fountain Valley School District’s three open seats. The district oversees eight elementary and four middle schools in Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach. Board President Pro Tem Judith Edwards, Trustee Nicola Weiss and retired educator Sandra Crandall are also in the running.

Incumbent Celia Jaffe has completed the paperwork for one of the three open seats on the Huntington Beach City School District. The district oversees seven elementary and two middle schools. Board members Rosemary Saylor and Shirley A. Carey and businessman Rob Fishel are also in the running.

Businessman Brian Joseph Rodden and Incumbents John Briscoe and Tracy Pellman have added their names to the list of candidates for the Ocean View School District’s three open seats. The district makes decisions for two preschools, 11 elementary and four middle schools in Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley. John Ortiz, a special education para-educator, and board Trustee George W. Clemens are also running.

Incumbent K. David Bridgewaters qualified as a candidate in the Westminster School District race. The district oversees one child development center and 13 elementary and three middle schools in Huntington Beach, Midway City, Garden Grove and Westminster. Retired Principal Ronald Zell, District Trustee Vice President Andrew Nguyen and fellow board member Mary Mangold are also in the running.
