NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors swept, 25-12, 25-7, 25-17, in the first-round match of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs Tuesday.

Rusty Sary had 15 kills and Cody Caldwell had 13 kills to lead the Sailors (18-8). Jackson Carmack had 37 assists, while Connor Curry and Ian Sequeira both had seven digs. John Macbeth had three kills for the Sailors, who will face Palos Verdes in the second round Thursday.

There will be a coin flip today to determine the match’s site.

NEWPORT COAST — The Lightning won in three, 26-24, 25-10, 25-17, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs Tuesday.

Mattias Russo-Larsson had 10 kills and two aces and Chris Zadra and Kent Kawaguchi added nine kills each for the Lightning (15-9).

Sage Hill will face Flintridge Prep in the second round Thursday, and the site will be determined today via coin flip.

COSTA MESA — Senior center fielder Jesse Fox hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to win the key Orange Coast League game for the Mustangs. Junior third baseman Tyler Sheffner and senior catcher Garrett Hirsch each added solo homers for Costa Mesa.

Junior pitcher PJ Maloney threw a complete game for his eighth victory of the season.

The defending league champion Mustangs (14-12, 8-3 in league) will try to capture a share of the league title Thursday when they play away at Laguna Beach. If the Mustangs win Thursday and Estancia loses to Calvary Chapel, the Mustangs claim sole possession of the league title. If both teams win or lose, they will share the league title.

IRVINE — Senior outfielder Chase Carlisle went three for four with a double and two runs batted in for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League loss Tuesday.

Junior outfielder Brian Ford went two for five with an RBI and sophomore infielder Brent Lawson went two for three against Beckman, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division III coaches’ poll.

The Sea Kings (10-15, 7-7 in league), in second place in league, will play their final league game at home against Beckman Thursday.

NEWPORT COAST — Alex Jimenez pitched a complete-game shutout, scattering four hits for the Lightning in the Academy League game Tuesday.

Jimenez struck out 10 and walked one for Sage Hill, which scored single runs in the first and third innings. Dusty Orrantia was two for two with a double and an RBI, and Darren Hardy also drove in a run.

Sage Hill, ranked No. 5 in the CIF Southern Section Division VI coaches’ poll, plays at Crean Lutheran on Friday in its league finale.
