DAVIS â After a first-pitch hiccup, UC Irvine senior pitcher Christian Bergman was perfect leading the Anteatersâ baseball team to a 13-0 Big West Conference road win over UC Davis Saturday.
Bergman allowed a leadoff single to Daniel Cepin, who was then caught trying to steal. Bergman retired the next 26 he faced, using just 89 pitches to record the Anteatersâ first shutout of the season.
It was the first shutout of his UCI career for Bergman, who struck out six to help the Anteaters improve to 23-13, 7-4 in conference. He lowered his earned-run average from 5.44 to 4.62.
UCI gave Bergman plenty of offensive support, including 10 extra-base hits in their 15-hit attack.
Seven Anteaters had doubles, including two apiece from Casey Stevenson and Jeff Cusick.
Brian Hernandez had a triple and a double and drove in a team-best three runs.
Stevenson and Cusick each drove in two runs as did Ronnie Shaeffer, who was one for two.
UCI pitchers have held UC Davis (16-18, 2-6) to four hits and one run in two games.
The series concludes today at 1 p.m.
It was the first UCI shutout since a 1-0 win over Nevada on March 30 last season, a span of 70 games.

STANFORD â The top-seeded Cardinal produced a 30-26, 28-30, 30-25, 30-27 victory to end the season of the defending NCAA champion Anteaters Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at Maples Pavilion.
UCI, the No. 8 seed in the MPSF Tournament, finished 15-15.
The Anteaters were led by Carson Clark (23 kills), Jordan DuFault (18) and Cory Yoder (a season-best 17). All three standouts will return next season.
Sophomore middle blocker Austin DâAmore had seven block assists and freshman libero Will Montgomery had a career-best 19 digs.
âOur goal at the beginning of every year is to complete the season as the best team in America and the level of our skills was not sufficient to be the best team this year,â UCI Coach John Speraw said. âWe learned a lot and look forward to getting back on the court next year.â
Sophomore middle blocker Gus Ellis, a Corona del Mar High product, had five kills, a .500 hitting percentage and two block assists for the Cardinal (20-6).

LONG BEACH â The No. 4-seeded Anteaters upset the top-seeded Tigers in the semifinals of the Big West Conference tournament Saturday at Long Beach State.
The defending tournament champion Anteaters (14-14) will meet No. 2-seeded Cal State Northridge in todayâs title match at 3:45 p.m., also at Long Beach State.
Morgan Vickers, a Newport Harbor High product, had seven saves for UCI, which received two goals apiece from Jessy Cardey, Cortney Collyer and Caitlin Haskell.

FULLERTON â The visiting Pirates scored five runs in the ninth, but left the bases loaded when a flyout ended the Orange Empire Conference game Saturday.
Sam Michaels went three for five with two runs batted in and scored twice for OCC (17-15, 9-9 in conference).
Jordan Beck was two for four with two RBIs and Kris Martin was two for two for the Pirates.
OCC starter Andy Abrams allowed seven earned runs in 2 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Doubleheader
RIVERSIDE â Visiting No. 11-ranked Vanguard was swept by No. 5-ranked Cal Baptist in a pair of Golden State Athletic Conference games Saturday.
The Lions fell, 7-4, in the second game, after dropping a 6-1 verdict in Game 1. The two losses dropped Vanguard (31-12, 21-11 in conference) to third place in the GSAC.
Tyson Leighton went four for seven, with two hits in each game to pace the Lions, who never led in either game.
Cal Baptist is 37-12, 26-6 and leads second-place Point Loma Nazarene (22-10) with four regular-season conference games remaining.
Vanguardâs Jason Dovel allowed four hits and no earned runs in 6 1/3 innings in Game 2, but absorbed his first loss in five decisions.

MISSION VIEJO â Orange Coast College won menâs and womenâs team titles at the three-day event completed Sunday at Saddleback College.
The OCC womenâs 1,022 points were 411 better than runner-up Riverside, while the Pirates men topped Riverside, 869-823.
OCCâs Michelle Kirkpatrick and Derek Pronk were named conference menâs and womenâs swimmer of the year, respectively.
OCCâs Jamie Pearce was named female conference diver of the year and OCCâs Anthony Iacopetti was the womenâs coach of the year.
Pronk (200-yard backstroke in one minute, 54.67 seconds), Chris Uncanin (100 free in 46.77) and Josh Kloppenburg (200 breaststroke in 2:06.42) won individual events for the OCC men Saturday.
Kierstin Colesen (100 free in 52.04) and Lindsay Ronce (100 butterfly in 59.43) were womenâs winners for the Pirates, who also won both the menâs and womenâs 400 free relays.
TRACK & FIELD
O.C Dual
FULLERTON â Visiting UC Irvine was defeated by Cal State Fullerton in menâs and womenâs dual meets Saturday.
The Fullerton men won, 80-73, and the Titansâ women prevailed, 96-58.
Tim Murphy (400 meters in 48.47 seconds), Colin Hacker (800 in 1:53.66), Nick Osborne (1,500 in 4:01.67), Jacob Yowell (110 high hurdles in 14.56) and Justin Carter (triple jump with a leap of 46 feet, 10 1/4 inches) were individual menâs winners for UCI.
UCI womenâs event winners were Kelly Collins (400 hurdles in 1:03.75), Katherine Nielsen (two-mile in 11:24.37), Natasha Wardley (long jump at 18-5 3/4 ), Madeline Leduc (triple jump at 39-6 1/2 ) and Chelsea Pham (javelin with a throw of 100-0).

Doubleheader
COSTA MESA â Visiting Cal Baptist, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, swept Vanguard, posting a 4-1 win in the opener, followed by a 2-1 triumph in Golden State Athletic Conference play Saturday.
Vanguard outhit the Lancers, 7-4, in Game 1, including two hits each by Stephanie Leisenring, Angela St. Croix and Kaysie Flasck.
The Lions (29-25, 8-16 in conference) had just two hits in the second game, in which Emma Holden struck out 13 and did not walk any to improve to 16-0.
Cal Baptist is 54-2, 23-1.
MENSâ TENNIS
Ojai Tournament
OJAI â Orange Coast had two doubles teams reach the Round of 16 in the community college division Saturday.
Brad Fisher and Yannick Lepage won twice to reach the Round of 16.
OCCâs Matt Miller and Kevin Tran upset No. 9-seeded Emmanuel Haug and Joe Tresierras of Glendale, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. in the first round, but later lost.
Fisher and Miller reached the second round in singles.
