Estancia defeats Mesa
COSTA MESA — Estancia High senior first baseman Nicole Marlborough continued her hot hitting against rival Costa Mesa in an Orange Coast League game Friday at Estancia.
Marlborough, the Eagles’ top hitter who went three for four with three runs batted in, helped Estancia beat the Mustangs, 9-6. She was two for four and scored a run the last time Estancia (8-8, 2-1 in league) beat Costa Mesa (8-6, 0-3).
Marlborough, with a .471 average before Friday, came to bat in the third inning and drove in shortstop Amy Hartwell with a single to center field.
“It felt nice because I’ve had a hard time hitting lately and so being able to help my team get some RBIs felt good,†Marlborough said.
Third baseman Rachelle Reynolds drilled a two-run double after Marlborough. Second baseman Kendra Fisher also had a triple in the second inning when Cheyanne Flores had a two-RBI single that scored Fisher and Jillian Beck, who reached on a bunt.
The Mustangs trailed, 7-0, but that didn’t stop them from scoring two runs in the sixth inning. Shortstop Alex Krohnfeldt hit a two-run triple that scored Kira Mitani and Alosina Skipps, who had a RBI triple in the seventh.
Krohnfeldt had an RBI in the seventh, but the Eagles held off the Mustangs.
“We need to take one at-bat at a time and continue to score runs,†Estancia Coach Judd Fryslie said.
The Eagles play host to Calvary Chapel Tuesday.
The Mustangs will play against Calvary Chapel at home on Friday.
“We have the skill, we just need to work on offense and defense like we do every day in practice,†Costa Mesa Coach Nichole Maddox said.
