Julia Goggin and Cheyenne Eisert, both freshmen at Laguna Beach High, took the championship title at the California Beach Volleyball Assn. season opener in San Diego last weekend in the Girls’ 16-and-under division.

Working their way through pool play in the morning, the afternoon brought on a series of single-elimination playoffs. The girls battled it out, staying calm and focused against teams that were older and more experienced. When Goggin and Eisert reached the finals, they topped Sevana Dvorak and Gigi Morally.

Laguna JV baseball team bounces back: While the Laguna Beach High junior varsity baseball team’s unbeaten string of 12 straight victories was broken at an away game last Friday against Calvary Chapel, the Breakers bounced back with a decisive 13-1 victory Tuesday at Godinez.

Ironically, in its loss to Calvary, Laguna’s JV team played some of its best baseball of the year. However, the team faced its toughest pitcher of the year in Calvary’s hard-throwing Wayne Haccou. Trailing, 3-1, going into the top of the seventh, hot-hitting Travis Clawson tied the game with a triple that scored C.J. Rodriques and Jack Pillsbury. However, in the bottom of the seventh, the Breakers’ Santi Pierini (in relief of Jackson Rees) couldn’t hold the Eagles down, giving up two walks and a hit to end the game with a 4-3 loss.

However, the Breakers bounced right back at Godinez. Clawson continued his hot-hitting ways with his second home run of the year “†a towering shot to center field “†and a ground-rule double that also almost cleared the park. In all, Clawson had five runs batted in during the Breakers’ five-inning mercy-rule victory against Godinez.

Clawson wasn’t the only Breaker with a hot bat. Sophomore catcher Harrison Williams picked up an RBI with a solid two-for-four day, while Eli Cassard became the fifth JV player to hit a home run this year.

Left-handed pitcher Alex LeBon battled a persistent rain and very slippery ball to pick up the victory. Giving up only two bloop singles in a two-hitter, LeBon moved his record to 4-0 in league play and 5-0 overall.
