Andersen, Damato win at regionals

Laguna Beach High sophomore Yoshi Andersen was part of the first-place team from the Southern Pacific Zone last weekend at the USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program Southern California Regionals at Pomona College.

Breakers Coach Ethan Damato also coached the SoPac Zone team to victory.

Andersen was one of 30 players chosen to participate in this summer’s National Training Selection camp. In July 2008, she was one of 13 members of the women’s Youth National Team to compete at the Junior Pan American Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil; the U.S. took the silver medal.

Scott, Pavlik open AVP season

Rachel Scott (formerly Wacholder) and Whitney Pavlik opened their respective Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Tour seasons last weekend at the Fort Lauderdale Open in Florida.

Scott, a Laguna High grad who’s married to men’s player Sean Scott, finished tied for fifth with new partner Elaine Youngs. The No. 4-seeded team split $6,000.

Pavlik, the 2008 AVP Rookie of the Year, also has a new partner in Jennifer Fopma.

The Laguna native and Fopma were seeded No. 11 but finished tied for 17th, taking home $700.

Scott, 34, and Pavlik, 26, return to action next weekend at the Santa Barbara Open (April 29 to May 2).

Water polo alumni game Saturday

The Laguna Beach High boys’ and girls’ water polo teams are hosting an alumni game from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Breakers’ pool.

Admission is $5 and kids are in free. There will be a “splash ballâ€Â clinic from 10 a.m. to noon and Olympian Terry Schroeder will be hosting a clinic from noon to 2:30 p.m. for the Laguna polo team.

Volleyball alumni game is May 7

The Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball program is holding its annual alumni game May 7 at Dugger Gym. Tickets are $10, and $5 for students. There will be a silent auction at 5 p.m. and the first match starts at 5:30 p.m.

The alumni vs. varsity match is at 7:30 p.m.

Dinner will be provided by In-N-Out and there will be raffles for prizes.
