Caregiving course offered Tuesday

The American Red Cross will provide a course on Family Caregiving of Seniors, including information about home safety, handling personal care, medication precautions, dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia, and avoiding burnout. The class will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Susi Q Senior Center, 380 Third St. For more information, call (949) 497-2441.

Workshop on change is Wednesday

UCLA clinical psychologist Marion K. Jacobs will lead a workshop on making successful changes from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Susi Q.

Jacobs will teach specific techniques such as “Mindfulness Training,â€Â “Getting Rid of Dysfunctional Thinkingâ€Â and the “Overcoming Roadblocks to Change Through the Use of the Downward Arrow Technique.â€Â The cost is $50, which includes a copy of Jacobs’ book “Take-Charge Living: How to Recast Your Role in Lifeâ€Â¦One Sentence at a Time.â€Â

Estate planning series continues

A free lecture series by local attorney R. Lee Andersen will provide a brief summary of what is involved in estate planning for individuals with modest estates.

The series is called Estate Planning 101: Everything you wanted to know about estate planning but were afraid to ask.

Refresher bridge course begins

An eight-week course, taught by American Contract Bridge League Certified Bridge instructor Ann Cressman, Silver Life Master, is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 3 through June 28 at the Susi Q. Designed for players who want to brush up on their skills, each session will start with a short lesson on basic bidding techniques and responses, followed by supervised play, discussion of hands and scoring. Elder abuse lecture scheduled

A free elder abuse lecture sponsored by the Office on Aging is offered from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 6 at the Susi Q Senior Center. Several types of elder abuse, including physical, emotional, intellectual and fiduciary, will be described. In addition to an overview of the types of abuses, detection and prevention ideas will also be discussed. For more information, call (949) 497-2441.

Free hearing screening offered

Dr. Bob Pettis of South Coast Hearing Specialists will perform free hearing screenings from 1:30 to 4 p.m. May 7 at the Susi Q. The screenings will include comprehensive pure-tone and speech audiometry. Appointments will be scheduled every 30 minutes. Call (949) 497-2441.

AARP driver safety program set

An AARP Driver Safety class is being offered from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 13 and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 14 at the Susi Q. This refresher course is geared especially toward the safety needs of older drivers. Participants will learn safe driving strategies and defensive driving techniques. Course participants may be eligible to receive a discount on their auto insurance premiums. Fees are $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Call (949) 497-2441 to register.
