Chargers clean up at league
The Sunset League dual meet season was dominant for the Edison High wrestling team.
Nothing changed Saturday at league finals, where the Chargers finished first at Marina High. Edison finished with 197.5 points, followed by Fountain Valley (149) in second and Marina (138) in third.
Six Edison wrestlers won individual titles, including sophomore Brenton Visnoski (130 pounds); junior Erick Zumwalt (135); senior Victor Diaz (140); senior Aaron Lopez (152); senior Scott Sire (160); senior Weston Hawkins (189). Additionally, senior Dalton Boyd placed second at 119s, as did sophomore Jordan Lyle at 125s and senior Jordan Zumwalt, the UCLA-bound football linebacker, at 215s.
“I think we did good,†Edison Coach Luis Renteria said. “On Friday, I told the guys I was expecting to have nine or 10 guys in the finals. It was expected. The kids have been working pretty hard.â€
Hawkins advanced to the CIF State meet last year. This year, Renteria, in his fifth year as head coach, said he expects multiple Chargers to make it.
“We’ve got the kids,†he said. “It’s just a matter of them wanting it more than the coaches.â€
Individual champions for Fountain Valley included Jake Castroreale at 112s, Joey Knaack at 171s and Courtland Drummond at 215s, while Edgar De La Torre (103s) and Sean Pitoniak (135s) were finalists.
Junior Alex Anunciation (119s) and senior Chad Scheaffer (145s) were individual champions for Marina and freshman Mario Dominguez (112s), senior Angel Ordaz (140s) and junior Marcus Patterson (heavyweight) were finalists.
The top three in each division advanced to the CIF Individuals, hosted by Fountain Valley on Feb. 19 and 20.
Local wrestlers finishing third in their division included Sascha Carlisle of Marina (103); Cory Porter of Fountain Valley (119); Brandon Brown of Marina (125); Steele Escobedo of Fountain Valley (130); Cameron Bustos of Edison (145); Sean Roberts of Fountain Valley (152); Greg Meline of Edison (171); Tyler Smith of Marina (215) and Barry Gee of Fountain Valley (Edison).
Renteria said the top five finishers at CIF Individuals advance to the CIF Masters Meet and the top nine from there to the CIF State Meet.
Edison will also compete in the CIF dual meet championships Saturday at Los Alamitos High.
“I think we’ll do all right,†Renteria said. “It’s just a matter of the matchups and if the guys are ready to wrestle that day. I believe in my heart that we’re ready.â€
