June Murphy Hawkins

June Murphy Hawkins, born June 19, 1919, passed away on February 4,

2010. She lived a rich long life and celebrated her 90th birthday last June with

her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

June was born in Los Angeles and attended Marlborough High School. She

received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stanford University where

she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma social sorority. Throughout her high

school and college careers she loved sports and excelled in tennis. She was head

of the tennis team and played the summer tennis circuit while still at Stanford

University. She also remembered her summers growing up on Balboa Island and

being a member of the Balboa Island Yacht Club excelling in swimming, rowing,

and sailing. Many of her recent trips involved sailing.

She married George William (Bill) Hawkins of Santa Ana on September 25,

1942. She taught at Hamlin School in San Francisco until Bill 4nished medical

school and joined the Navy. Following World War II she and Bill settled in Santa

Ana and then Orange where she raised her four children. She was 4-H leader for

the West Orange 4-H club and then leader and organizer for the Orange Acres

Backbreakers 4-H.

June was also in:uential in the development of Orange Uni4ed School

District and served on the School Board between 1961 and 1969 during much of

the heavy growth in Orange. She also volunteered at St. Joseph Hospital and the

Homework House in Orange.

June’s children and grandchildren remember the strong dedication she had to

her family, the fun parties at her home, and the days they spent at the beach with

her. She loved nothing more than to have her immediate family gathered around

her.

She is preceded in death by her father, William Keenan Murphy, her mother

Vivian Lucille Lamoreux Murphy, her 4ve siblings, and her husband George

William Hawkins. She is survived by her four children, Margaret Hawkins Hill

of Houston, Kathryn Hawkins Creagan of Anaheim, John Murphy Hawkins

of Newport Beach and James Mazet Hawkins of Newport Beach; her seven

grandchildren, Elizabeth Hawkins Miller, Brooke Hawkins Gillman, David

William Hill, Bonnie Hill-Dowdy, Sarah Hawkins Daniel, Kathryn Hawkins

Canton, and Megan Hawkins; and her four great–grandchildren, Cory Hawkins

Hill, Kai David Hill, Caroline Lucille Daniel, and Camille Jane Canton.

Memorial services will be held at Harborside Restaurant, 400 Main St.,

Newport Beach, CA 92661 (949-673-4633) on February 14, 2010 at 2 p.m.
