Thompson earns honor

Katey Thompson can add another honor to her stellar senior year with the Newport Harbor High girls’ volleyball team.

The UC Santa Barbara-bound middle blocker is the ESPN RISE CalHiSports.com State Girls’ Athlete of the Week after leading the Sailors to the CIF State Division I championship Saturday.

Thompson, a team captain, recorded a match-high 14 kills, and finished with two service aces, two digs and one block in Newport Harbor’s sweep of Salinas at UC Irvine.

She also had a match-high 25 kills in a five-game win at Dos Pueblos of Goleta Dec. 1.
