CLOVIS — Sarah Furgatch, a recent graduate of Corona del Mar High, qualified for the 2012 Olympic swim trials by winning the 200-meter breaststroke at the Speedo Championship Series in Clovis Thursday.

Furgatch, 17, finished in 2 minutes, 31.27 seconds, nearly breaking the section record set in 2005 by Stephanie Gabert (2:31.23), another CdM alumna.

Furgatch, bound for Princeton, is third in the nation for her age group and 28th overall for the 200 breaststroke.

Kelsey Larson, also a recent CdM grad headed to Nebraska, finished ninth, 2:38.33, just 2.5 seconds from qualifying for the Olympic trials.

BREAKERS END SEASON

The Newport Breakers lost to the Springfield Lasers in a super tiebreaker, ending their season in the Western Conference Championship of World Team Tennis Friday night.

The Lasers won, 20-19 (7-3 in the tiebreaker). The Lasers’ Vania King beat the Breakers’ Marie-Eve Pelletier, 1-0 (7-3) in the tiebreaker. Ramon Delgado won in men’s singles, 5-3, but lost in men’s doubles with Newport Beach native Kaes Van’t Hof. It might’ve been Delgado’s final match with the Breakers. He’s been with the team for the past six seasons, but might leave to spend more time with his family.

Delgado, 32, has his wife, Alejandra, and their 4-month-old daughter, Maria Fernanda, waiting for him back at his home in Asuncion, Paraguay.

The Washington Kastles won the WTT championship with a 23-20 win over Springfield Sunday.
