Man is killed in biking accident

A Newport Beach man was killed Thursday while riding his bike in Newport Coast, authorities said.

Police said Daryl David Benefiel, 43, was riding his bike south on Ridge Park Road about 5:02 p.m. when he was hit crossing Tesoro, the street entrance to a gated community there.

Benefiel, who was wearing his helmet, was hit by a car turning left into the community, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police did not cite or arrest the driver, Nathan Tsuchiya of Newport Beach.

Police continue to investigate the collision and said anyone with information about the incident should call Detective Bill Beverly at (949) 644-3747.
