It’s playoff time for All-Star teams

Several Little Leaguers are preparing for the All-Stars playoffs that has some games beginning this weekend.

There is one game to watch involving two teams from Costa Mesa Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Ocean View Little League fields in Huntington Beach.

The Costa Mesa American All-Stars take on Costa Mesa National in a Majors Division matchup. The winner will advance to Sunday to face the winner of the Seaview-Ocean View game.

The Newport Beach 12-year-old All-Stars being play Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Lincoln Elementary.

There are more All-Star teams playing in the playoffs, as well, including Newport Beach 10-11-year-olds, 9-10 American and National teams from Newport Beach and Costa Mesa.

Newport Hills rules

Even an atypical steady June rain in Southern California, a number of sick swimmers and a strong opponent could not derail the Newport Hills Swim Team Saturday, when it played host to the Green Valley Dolphins in a South Coast Swim Conference dual meet.

On a day full of strong individual performances by swimmers on both teams, with one pool record shattered and another tied, the Newport Hills Killer Whales defeated the Dolphins, 715.50-615.50.

The Killer Whales were led by their 7-8 boys, who took first and second place in the medley and freestyle relays, as well as first, second- and third-place honors in the individual 25-yard and 50-yard freestyle events, the 25 breaststroke, the 25 butterfly and the 25 backstroke. The 11-12 boys Killer Whales were very similar as they swam to first place wins in both the medley and freestyle relays, and they were first, second and third in the individual 50 free, 50 fly, 50 back and 100 individual medley. Both the under-6 boys and the 9-10 boys for Newport Hills were first in the medley and freestyle relays, as well as all the individual events in their age group.

Four Newport Hills swimmers were three-time winners in individual events: Speedy Laster won the 25 freestyle, 25 breaststroke and 25 back in the under-6 division, Chloe Harbilas took first in the 25 freestyle, 25 fly and 50 free for the 7-8 girls, Hollace Barden swam to first-place finishes in the 100 freestyle, 50 fly and 100 IM for the 15-18 girls and Taylor Cortens earned the blue ribbon in the 50 fly, 50 back and 100 IM for the 11-12 boys, tying the pool record of 1:07.72 in the 100 IM originally set in 2007 by Killer Whale Blake Motal.

There were three Killer Whale two-time winners in individual events: Connor McManigal (25 free and 25 back) and Jake Bays (25 fly and 50 free) for the 7-8 boys and Henry Wilde (25 fly and 100 IM) in the 9-10 boys. And, there were four two-time individual event winners for the Dolphins: Jacquelyn Harris (25 fly and 50 back) and Lauren Wong (50 breaststroke and 100 IM) in the 9-10 girls, Jennifer Schulman (50 fly and 100 IM) in the 13-14 girls and Tony Morelli (50 breaststroke and 100 IM)in the 13-14 boys.

Individual event winners for Newport Hills were: Claire Eusey (25 free), Georgia Salvino (25 breaststroke) and Lauren Hughes (25 fly) in the under-6 girls, Hayes Wueste (25 fly) in the under-6 boys, Sophie Wallace (25 breaststroke) in the 7-8 girls, Wyatt Genc (25 breaststroke) in the 7-8 boys, JT Russell (50 free), Rourke Funke (50 breast) and Morgan Cortens (50 back) in the 9-10 boys, Brianna Daboub (50 breaststroke) and Natalie Wilde (50 backstroke) in the 11-12 firls, Brett Greenlee (50 free) and Danny Robertson (50 breaststroke) in the 11-12 boys, Cassidy Papa (50 free) in the 13-14 girls, Lesley Kaczmarek (50 back) in the 15-18 girls and Justin Papa (100 free) and Derek Roadcap (50 fly) in the 15-18 boys.
