A Notable Face
Charlie Buckingham, a Newport Harbor High product is featured in this week’s Sports Illustrated issue in the section, “Faces in the Crowd.â€
Buckingham, a sophomore skipper at Georgetown University, was named the Everett B. Morris Sailor of the Year. He also earned his second All-American honor this past year, after helping lead the Hoays to a third-place finish in both the team and fleet competitions at the Intercollegiate Sailing Assn. Championships.
Buckingham was one of three named to the 2009 U.S. Sailing Team AlphaGraphics for the Laser Class. He’s competing in Kiel, Germany
Glatch outsed by Peng
Alexa Glatch, a Newport Beach resident, didn’t last long at Wimbledon Tuesday, but battled with China’s Peng Shuai, ranked No. 36 in the world.
Peng, who reached the the third round at Wimbledon last year, beat Glatch, a wild card, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
In men’s competition, former Corona del Mar High standout Taylor Dent remains in contention.
Dent, at Wimbledon for the first time since 2005 after two back operations, plays today continuing a match that was suspsended Tuesday because of darkness.
