Burglars target electronics, stamps
Newport Beach police said they have little evidence on how at least one person burglarized eight businesses out of thousands of dollars in electronics in a medical complex on Superior Avenue without forcing their way in.
“There were no signs of forced entry to the exterior of the building as well as no signs of forced entry into any of the victims’ suites,†Sgt. Evan Sailor said. “One can only assume that a passkey was used or some type of device that allowed a suspect to defeat the locks. We have no workable evidence at this time.â€
Police said eight medical business suites at 1501 Superior Ave., Newport Beach were burglarized between Friday and Sunday.
A couple of business owners reported the crimes over the weekend when they visited their offices, but police logs show a wave of calls ended up coming in Monday morning when most owners returned to work.
The burglar, or burglars, stole everything from flat-screen TVs and laptop computers to petty cash and stamps.
Two offices lost more than $2,000 apiece in stolen computers and monitors.
Another office had a laptop and cash stolen while another had a DVD player worth $150 taken.
In total, the office complex, just up the street from Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, lost about $8,941 in equipment.
The building is locked during non-business hours, Sailor said.
