Ross earns AVP crown
OCEAN CITY, N.J. — Newport Harbor High product April Ross and partner Jennifer Kessy upset top-seeded Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branaugh in the women’s final to win the Assn. of Surfing Professionals beach volleyball tournament on Sunday.
Ross and Kessy, the No. 2-seeded team, combined for 10 aces to post a 21-12, 21-15 thrashing of a team that entered the match 35-1 against AVP competition this season. Ross and Kessy split $24,000.
It’s the second AVP tour win for Ross this season, as she and Kessy also won the Houston Open.
Youngs-Branaugh have won the other five AVP events this season.
Former Estancia High standout Matt Fuerbringer and partner Casey Jennings tied for third place in the men’s event, splitting $6,240.
UC Irvine product Whitney Pavlik and partner Stacy Rouwenhorst tied for ninth in the women’s event, splitting $3,960.
Corona del Mar resident Ty Loomis and partner Jonathan Acosta tied for 13th in the men’s tournament.
The AVP tour continues this weekend in Coney Island, N.Y.
