All-star matches have 10 locals

Penn State-bound Ryan Thompson of Costa Mesa High and Newport Harbor’s Mary Buckingham, headed for UC Berkeley, are two of 10 Newport-Mesa area seniors competing in tonight’s Dave Mohs Memorial All-Star matches at Newport Harbor High.

The girls’ match begins at 6 p.m. and the boys start after that first match ends.

Newport Harbor’s JB Green and Hamilton Day, bound for BYU, are playing for the south boys, as is Corona del Mar’s Dylan Davis, bound for UC Santa Barbara, Sage Hill School’s Bayle Smith and Thompson.

The girls’ south team includes Corona del Mar’s Conley Kipp and Estancia’s Annie Tomasek.

Newport Harbor’s Buckingham, Jennifer Palmquist and Arielle Lysacek are on the north team. Palmquist is headed for Princeton, Lysacek for University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Corona del Mar girls’ coach Darryl Gan will be leading the south girls’ team. Gan coached the Sea Kings to the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA final in the fall.

Lance Stewart, a former CdM coach who now works for Laguna Beach, will guide the boys’ south team. The Laguna Beach boys won the CIF Division III regional championship Saturday.

Money raised from the matches is being donated to the Julian Dunn Cancer fund. Julian, 5, was diagnosed with brain cancer in December. He is the son of Richard Dunn, a former Daily Pilot sports editor .
