NEWPORT BEACH — Corona del Mar High boys’ tennis coach Brian Ricker said his team improves with each match. Of course getting Newport Harbor at any point in the schedule would work wonders for the Sea Kings’ motivation.

Ricker said his players were excited to compete against their Back Bay rivals, and it showed. Corona del Mar swept in singles en route to a 15-3 nonleague victory at Newport Harbor Tuesday.

“The kids like [the Battle of the Bay] so much,” said Ricker, whose team is ranked No. 9 in CIF Southern Section Division I. “They were so excited to go over there. From match to match, it’s hard to create that level of excitement.”

There was plenty of energy in singles for CdM (4-2). Junior Ryan Peyton, the Sea Kings’ No. 1 singles player, swept at love. Senior Chris Damion also swept, dropping just three games. Sophomore Shane Korber won twice at No. 2 singles and junior David Fink substituted in for a win.

Newport Harbor Coach Kristin Case said the Sailors were dealing with several injuries, but that did not discount CdM’s victory.

Junior Erik Heimstaedt (sprained wrist), sophomore Tracy Bebli (sprained knee) and junior Daniel Lee (injured wrist) have been battling injuries.

In doubles, Newport Harbor’s No. 1 duo of seniors Daron Arnold and Cameron Chase won twice, while the No. 3 tandem of sophomores Craig McKennon and Gregg Brostek earned one win.
