Wynne singled out; ‘Eaters voted No. 1
UC Irvine sophomore Kevin Wynne has been named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Co-Player of the Week in men’s volleyball after helping the then-No. 2-ranked Anteaters knock off then-top-ranked Cal State Northridge Friday to claim the nation’s No. 1 ranking this week.
Wynne, a 6-foot-7 middle blocker, hit .500 with 12 kills at Cal State Northridge, where UCI earned a 27-30, 30-28, 30-23, 26-30, 15-10 triumph to end the Matadors 10-match winning streak. He also had a season-high nine block assists, one shy of his career high.
Wynne is ranked No. 10 nationally with 1,32 blocks per set and is second in the MPSF with a .462 hitting percentage.
He is averaging 1.81 kills per set.
UCI (17-3, 12-2 in conference) gains the No. 1 ranking for the first time this season. It was also ranked No. 1 at various times in 2003, 2006 and 2007. The Anteaters won the program’s lone NCAA championship in 2007.
Coach John Speraw’s squad has been ranked in the top 10 for 67 consecutive weeks, 14 of those in the top spot.
UCI is idle this week for finals and returns to action March 26 and 27 playing host to Hawaii at the Bren Events Center.
