SOFTBALL

Costa Mesa Tournament

COSTA MESA — Costa Mesa High reeled off two dramatic wins to win the bronze division, the equivalent to finishing ninth in the 20-team tournament, Saturday at TeWinkle Park.

Junior pitcher Kira Mitani proved stellar in both games. She went three for three with a home run and earned a pitching win, leading the Mustangs (6-2) to a 9-7, extra-inning victory over Corona del Mar to win the bronze division.

The game was supposed to be called after five innings for time limit, but the teams played an extra inning with international tie-breaker rules. Costa Mesa scored twice in the sixth and Mitani held off the Sea Kings in the bottom of the frame.

Mitani struck out two and walked three to improve to 6-2. Vanessa Castro went two for four, Alesina Skipps added a three-run home run and Alex Krohnfeldt went two for three.

Mitani and Krohnfeldt earned all-touranment honors.

Krohnfeldt came up big in a 7-6 victory over Oxford Academy earlier Saturday. She hit a three-run home run, that proved to be the game-winner in the top of the sixth and final inning.

With two outs, nobody on and the Mustangs trailing, 6-4, Mitani started the rally in the sixth with a triple. Skipps then was hit by a pitch to reach. She stole second. Then Krohnfeldt hit the home run on a 2-2 pitch.

“We showed amazing heart,” Costa Mesa Coach Marcus Franco said.

Mitani struck out eight and walked one in six inings against Oxford. She went two for four with a triple and a home run. Sami Feinstein went three for four. Skipps tripled. Michelle Hernandez was three for three, while Krohnfeldt and Jessica Hayes both went two for three.

Ocean View beat Calvary Murrieta, 6-0, for the tournament championship.
