IRVINE — Freshman Martin Whitmore scored a game-high 27 points to lead four Pirates in double figures in the Orange Empire Conference opener Friday at Irvine Valley.

Whitmore made 10 of 15 field-goal attempts and also led the winners (8-12) with eight rebounds, six steals and three assists.

IRVINE — Sophomore Simone Ibbotson scored 22 of her game-high 24 points after halftime to lead the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference opener Friday at IVC.

Newport Harbor High product Ivy Melo had seven points off the bench for the Lasers (12-9).

Santa Barbara tournament

GOLETA — UC Irvine split a pair of matches on the first day of the 45th annual UC Santa Barbara/Elephant Bar Collegiate Friday.

The No. 6-ranked Anteaters (2-1) opened with a 30-28, 30-26, 30-25 loss to No. 4 Long Beach State, then defeated No. 9 BYU, 30-28, 32-30, 29-31, 30-27.

UC Irvine will play No. 2-ranked UCLA at 1:30 p.m. today in the fifth-place match.
