People of all faith and ages are invited to participate in the Interfaith Council’s Hearts and Hands event, a day of service to our community, the world and its people Nov. 22. From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. volunteers will perform hands-on service work at the LDS Church, 16th Street and Dover Drive, in Newport Beach, according to Jaimie Day, the council’s vice president.

Lunch will be available from the Newport Beach Fire Department. High School students can receive community service hours for their volunteer time, according to Day. To find out how your church, community or office group can participate, contact Day at (949) 642-9460 or at [email protected].

Then at 7 p.m. Nov. 23, join the Celebration of Thanksgiving at the new St. Mark Presbyterian Church, 2200 San Joaquin Hills Road, Newport Beach. This annual Interfaith Council event includes prayers and scripture readings by leaders of a variety of faiths and music by the Bahais Children’s Choir, and the choirs of St. Mark, Our Lady Queen of Angels and Newport Harbor Lutheran Church. Price of admission is a can of food that will be given to the homeless of Orange County.

The Harbor Mesa Lions Club is sponsoring the annual Peace Poster Contest at the Westside and Lou Yantorn branches of the Boys & Girls Club. Entrants must be 11 to 13 years old. The theme this year is “Peace Begins With Me.”

Each year, Lions clubs around the world proudly sponsor this contest in local schools and youth groups to encourage young people to artistically express their visions of peace.

The winning poster on the club level will compete with other club winners in the districts and the Multiple District ending with the 24 international finalists. More than 350,000 young participants worldwide compete each year. The final winner receives a trip to New York City with two family members to attend Lions Day with the United Nations. The winner receives a plaque and $2,500. The other 23 international winners receive $500. Harbor Mesa member Sandi Scheafer is chairing the club’s contest.

WORTH REPEATING
