What does it take to provide great service in a technological world during an economic downturn?

Steve Winning, of Newport Coast, says he knows and he wants to share the answer with every service organization and business out there who is willing to take some bold action and fully engqge their team members to become customer service champions.

As a “Hotel Guy” during the past three decades, running hotels as a General Manager at independent boutique hotels, full-service branded hotels like Marriott, Hilton and Doubletree and leading suburban, airport, convention and downtown properties he has pretty much seen and experienced it all. And, as it has been in the past, everything continues to go in cycles. Managing this current downward cycle properly could not be more important to those who want to be service winners and, eventually become or continue to be market share leaders.

As Dr. Randy Pausch said in his world famous “Last Lecture” at Carnegie-Mellon University last year, “We cannot change the cards we are dealt, only the way we play our hand.” In these challenging times it is absolutely essential for all of us to play the hand we are dealt to its maximum potential.

Successful organizations have one common, central focus--customers. True success comes to those, and only those, who are obsessed with taking care of their customers.

So, Steve has decided to do something to make a difference. He has created his own company, Winning Hospitality, and is currently soliciting all types of service organizations to share his thoughts and actions with all levels of their teams.

In this challenging time of contingencies and cutbacks the vast majority of service organizations are now doing less than ever before in order to save money. The business winners in today’s service economy will be those who inspire their teams to do more with less, who encourage and embrace empowerment and who recognize their service champions.

As a two-time survivor of non-hodgkins lymphoma with multiple chemotherapy treatments, temporary hair loss, radiation and a bone-marrow transplant to add to his resume, Steve is a great believer in a quote by Josua Wood, John Wooden’s father--”Make Each Day Your Masterpiece.”
