CdM, Sage earn seeds
Unbeaten Corona del Mar High earned the No. 1 seed in Division I and Sage Hill is the No. 2 seed in Division IV as pairings were announced Monday for the CIF Southern Section girls’ tennis playoffs.
Newport Harbor (17-3), ranked No. 7 in the final regular-season Division II poll, joins CdM (15-0) and Sage (15-5) as teams that earned a first-round home match when action begins Thursday at 2 p.m.
Estancia (12-5), the runner-up in the Orange Coast League, plays at San Clemente Thursday in a Division I first-round contest.
The Sea Kings, led by Pacific Coast League singles runner-up Melissa Matsuoka, a junior, and league doubles champions Karen Ishii and Kelli Feeley, will face Calvary Chapel in the first round. Ishii is a senior and Feeley is a junior.
Coach Brian Ricker’s squad could potentially meet Freeway League champion Troy in the quarterfinals, with No. 4-seeded Campbell Hall, the Olympic League champion, potentially awaiting in the semifinals.
Sage Hill, paced by junior Julia Blakeley, the Academy League singles champion, will face the winner of today’s wild-card match between South Hills and Bellflower in its first-round clash.
Coach A.G. Longoria’s Lightning finished runner-up in league to top-seeded St. Margaret’s.
Newport Harbor, which won all 10 of its Sunset League matches to claim its first crown since rejoining the league from the Sea View League before the 2006 season, is led by the doubles tandem of seniors Natalie Small and Jeanne Frei, who finished third at the league individual tournament last week.
The Sailors, coached for former Newport Harbor standout Kristen Case, square off against either Vista Murrieta or Fontana, which meet in today’s wild-card round.
Estancia, coached by Rachel de los Santos, is paced by two-time Orange Coast League singles champion Ellie Edles, a senior bound for UC Davis.
The second round in all divisions is Saturday, with the quarterfinals on tap for Nov. 18. The semis are Nov. 20 and the finals are Nov. 24 at the Claremont Club.
The other seeds in Division I are No. 2 Dana Hills, No. 3 Palos Verdes and No. 4 Campbell Hall.
Walnut is the No. 3 seed and Santa Ynez the No. 4 seed in Division IV.
