MEN’S GOLF

St. Mary’s Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH — The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished fourth in the event that concluded Tuesday at Poppy Hills Golf Course.

UCI shot a team total of six-under 278 in the final round to finish with a 54-hole score of 864. San Francisco won the 17-team tournament at 855, Wisconsin was second at 860 and UC Santa Barbara third at 861.

USF’s Domingo Jojola was medalist at six-under 207 (71-66-70).

UCI sophomore Bryan Harris shot a four-under 67 Tuesday and finished second in the tournament at 208 (70-71-67).

Junior John Chin carded a 69 in the last round to finish 15th at 216 (74-73-69).

Anteater senior Sean Shahi tied Harris for the low round of the day with a 67 to finish 23rd at 218 (80-71-67). Freshman Roberto Francioni was 50th at 223 (74-74-75) while sophomore Max Greil placed 69th at 229 (79-74-76).

Coach Paul Smolinski’s UCI team returns to action Oct. 16-17 in the Del Walker Intercollegiate Classic at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach.

MEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 1, Biola 0

COSTA MESA — Lions senior midfielder Tom Culver scored in the 20th minute, lifting Vanguard to the Golden State Athletic Conference win at home on Tuesday.

The goal, assisted by junior Ryan Marquez, was the first of the season for Culver. It helped Vanguard improve to 4-3-1, 2-0 in conference.

Sophomore Trevor Herrera made three saves for Vanguard.

Biola dropped to 5-2-1, 0-1-1.

Santiago Canyon 2, Orange Coast 1

COSTA MESA — Toshi Fujimura scored for the Pirates, who lost their Orange Empire Conference opener Tuesday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

The score remained 1-0 for most of the game until the Pirates (4-5-0, 0-1) finally found the back of the net. A nice entry into the zone by Gustavo Ibarra was followed with a touch-pass to Toshi Fujimura and the freshman midfielder controlled the pass, the ripped a shot past Hawks’ goalkeeper Alan Orriny (seven saves) to tie the game in the 83rd minute.

Six minutes later, SCC’s Anton Jamir fed a pass near the goal that ended up on the foot of Plummer and the Hawks’ midfielder didn’t miss, burying the shot past Muhlstedt.

Santiago Canyon’s Jack Plummer scored the gamewinner in the 89th minute.

OCC goalkeeper Jake Muhlstedt had 10 saves.

Santiago Canyon improved to 2-4-3, 1-0 in conference.

The Pirates return to action on Friday at Riverside at 1 p.m. OCC’s next home contest will be on Oct. 10 against Golden West, beginning at 3 p.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Vanguard def. The Master’s

COSTA MESA — Shardai Sublett had 12 kills to lead the Lions to a 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 Golden State Athletic Conference win Tuesday night at the Pit.

Meghan Walsh recorded 29 assists for Vanguard (11-1, 6-1 in conference), while Jessica Roy had eight kills.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 5, Saddleback 0

MISSION VIEJO — Beth Krikorian and Madison Empting scored two goals each in the Pirates Orange Empire Conference victory Tuesday.

Cindy Rodriguez also scored a goal for Orange Coast (4-4-3, 2-2-1 in conference). Caitlin Schott had nine saves for the Pirates. Saddleback dropped to 2-5-3, 1-4-0.
