Breakers one of 64 teams in Dave Mohs tourney
The 30th edition of the Dave Mohs Tournament begins today at six local high schools.
Sixty-four prep girls’ volleyball teams are entered into the three-day event that continues Saturday and concludes with Monday’s championship-round action. The teams are split equally into two divisions.
“It will be a high-level tournament featuring teams from Southern California, Arizona and Utah,” Edison Coach Trent Jackson said.
Laguna Coach Lance Stewart agrees.
“It’s probably the strongest field of teams they’ve had in a long time,” said Stewart, whose program won the tournament in 2006. “There’s going to be some good competition there and there are some strong teams in it from outside of Orange County.
“Results in the tournament can help a team when it comes to future CIF (playoff) seedings.”
Divison I games will be played at Huntington Beach, Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar.
Division II game sites are Marina, Fountain Valley and Costa Mesa.
Laguna begins tournament play today with matches against Tesoro and Ayala, beginning with Tesoro at 3:30 p.m. at the Newport Harbor High gym.
