LOCALS COMPETE
BEAUMONT — Camden Nicholson, a senior-to-be at Corona del Mar High, fired a three-over-par 75 in the first round of the American Junior Golf Assn. TEE UP Junior Challenge at Oak Valley Golf Club Tuesday.
In the girls’ event, Lauren Draganza, who’s from Costa Mesa, shot a 14-over-par 86.
Nicholson, who is tied in ninth place with 14 other golfers, shot a 36 on the front nine and 39 on the back nine.
Tao Huang of Beaumont leads the boys with a 67.
Draganza is in 13th place after her 44 on the front nine and 42 on the back nine.
Hawaii’s Anna Jang sits atop the girls’ leaderboard with a 71. The second round starts today.
WALKER TO WALK ON
Corona del Mar resident Anthony Walker has decided to attend UC Santa Barbara and join the men’s volleyball team as a walk-on.
Walker is a 6-foot-8 middle blocker that recently graduated from Mater Dei High where he played two varsity seasons. Walker was a second-team All-Trinity League selection last season.
He will be walking onto a new program ran by recently hired head coach Rick McLaughlin who was previously the men’s volleyball coach at Loyola Marymount.
UCI CAMP COMING
UC Irvine baseball coach Mike Gillespie and his staff will host its Showcase Camp Aug. 15-17 at Anteater Ballpark.
UC Irvine’s Baseball High School Showcase Camp, tailored for kids ages 15-18, will give players the opportunity showcase their talents in a competitive environment. The camp, which costs $225 for pitchers and $325 for all other positions, offers players the opportunity to be exposed to Division I coaches and learn their philosophies for success at the college level.
Players will be grouped into teams and face off in head-to-head competition. The camp also offers instructional skill sessions, defensive drills, batting practice sessions, strength and conditioning, a UCI campus tour, and catered lunch each day.
