COMMUNITY & CLUBS:
The Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club presented two checks for $3,200 each to the two city high school foundations. Tournament Chairman Ray Stewart presented the check to Ann Bray of the Costa Mesa High School Foundation and Jennifer Knapp of the Estancia High School Foundation. The checks represented the net proceeds from the club’s spring Golf Tournament.
Each year a different local organization is selected as the recipient of the Tournament proceeds.
EXCHANGE HONORS TOP COPS
Exchange Club of Newport Harbor Past President Bill Bechtel presented one of the best police programs on record this past week, according to Dick Freeman, Spindriff editor. The Exchange Club recognized Scott May as the Outstanding Supervisor of the Year for the Costa Mesa Police Department, and Brent McKinley as Officer of the Year. Police Chief Chris Shawkey presented awards to both men. And Shawkey then became an honorary member of the Newport Harbor Exchange Club.
Newport Beach Police Chief John Klein gave awards to Dave Moon as Officer of the Year and to Sgt. Mike McDermott as Supervisor of the Year. A great deal of fun was had by all during the presentation of the awards, according to Freeman.
This is a first for the Exchange Club with both chiefs of police for Costa Mesa and Newport Beach as members.
DONATE A BOOK
Local rotary clubs will partner with the L.A. Times again this year in the annual Reading by 9 children’s book drive at the Orange County Fair, according to Rotary District Gov. Roger McGonegal. For free admission to the fair, bring one new or three gently used books to the fair and you will get in free today only. Rotarians will be accepting the books, boxing and loading them on trucks. This is part of the Reading by 9 initiative to have all children reading at grade level by the age of 9. To become better readers, children need books.
The books collected at the fair will be matched by Scholastic and distributed to public elementary schools within Orange and Los Angeles counties, McGonegal said.
WORTH REPEATING
Thought for the Day as provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council… “Leaders think and talk about the solutions. Followers think and talk about the problems.”
