Slammers advance into championship game today
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Slammers Futbol Club girls’ under-19 team, which includes Corona del Mar High product Taylor Fallon and Corona del Mar resident Jackie Zinke, will play for the title today at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships.
Fallon and Zinke were a part of the Slammers’ 2-1 victory over the FC Pennsylvania Strikers on Friday. The Slammers will face Force Football Club of Michigan for the title. The Slammers beat Force Football Club, 3-2, to open the tournament Wednesday.
The So Cal Blues girls’ under-15 team, coached by Vanguard University head man Randy Dodge, will play for the title today against the Dallas Texans. The So Cal Blues defeated Lonestars Red, 2-1, Friday.
The Slammers girls’ under-15 team suffered another heartbreak, similar to last year. The Slammers, who include CdM incoming sophomores Tessa Andujar, Jordan Dillion, Scarlett Fallon and Lindsey Luke, as well as Newport Beach resident Renee Mendiola, lost to KCFC Intensity, 1-0, on a last-minute goal Friday, keeping the Slammers out of the championship game.
Last year, the Slammers lost on a late goal in the second overtime of the girls’ under-14 title match.
The So Cal Blues girls’ under-16 team, which includes Newport Harbor High’s Elizabeth Eddy and Gillian Hogan, scored a 3-0 win over club Vardar to finish third Friday. Last year, the So Cal Blues won the under-15 title.
The Slammers girls’ under-17 team lost, 3-1, to FC Buck Vipers Friday and finished with an 0-3 record in the tournament.
