BOYS’ SWIMMING

Pacific Coast League finals

CORONA DEL MAR — Corona del Mar High won its second straight league title in dramatic fashion, outlasting Irvine by a single point Friday.

The Sea Kings scored 462 points, Irvine had 461.

“It was really exciting,” CdM boys’ swim coach Barry O’Dea said. “We were tied going into the breast and then after we were up by three going into relays.”

The only individual event winner for the deep Sea Kings was senior Yutaro Yamashita in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.11), a CIF Southern Section Division I automatic time. Yamashita also finished second in the 500 free in another auto time of 4:36.62, and freshman John Kim was second in both the 200 individual medley (a CIF auto time of 1:55.99) and 100 breaststroke (also an auto time of 59.90 seconds).

Michael Liao finished third in the 100 breast (1:00.13) and the 100 butterfly (54.75) for CdM. Both were also CIF automatic times.

Academy League finals

CERRITOS — Sage Hill used great depth to repeat as league champions at Cerritos Aquatic Center on Friday.

The Lightning didn’t lose a meet all season. Friday, they didn’t win any individual events, but their depth won out.

“We had by far the most swimmers make it into finals,” Coach Cari Knowlton said. “All of those swimmers got points for us.”

Sage’s Andrew Dorne finished second in the 200-yard individual medley and 500 freestyle, in CIF Southern Section Division IV automatic times of 2 minutes, 7.10 seconds and 5:06.34, respectively. Danny Harold swam a personal-best 1:03.55, another CIF automatic time, for second in the breaststroke.

Lightning sophomore Jake Blitzer was second in the 100 fly (56.46 seconds) and third in the 200 IM (2:18.39). Senior Beau Caillouette finished third in the 200 free (a CIF automatic 1:54.17) and 500 free (51.28).

The Division IV preliminaries are Tuesday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Pacific Coast League finals

CORONA DEL MAR — CdM junior Kelsey Larson won the 200-yard freestyle and the 500 free, as the Sea Kings placed third overall Friday at CdM.

University High won the title, followed by Laguna Hills.

Larson’s times of 1 minute, 56.45 seconds in the 200 free and 5:09.37 in the 500 were both CIF Southern Section Division I automatic times. Sarah Furgatch won the 200 individual medley in another CIF auto time of 2:08.39, and was a close second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.08, which is both a CIF auto time and an all-American time.

CdM junior Heather Van Hiel was second in the 50 free in 25.06 seconds, another automatic CIF time.

Academy League finals

CERRITOS — Sage Hill won the meet-ending 400-yard freestyle relay, but the Lightning finished third overall Friday at Cerritos Aquatic Center.

JDylan Conroy, Jordan Smith-Newman and Cameron Cline, along with Sarah Wesley, combined for a winning time of 4 minutes, 6.12 seconds. It’s also a CIF Southern Section Division IV consideration time.

Smith-Newman placed second in the 100 backstroke in a personal-best 1:09.44, also a CIF consideration time, while Conroy was third in both the 100 free and 200 free. Cline was also third in the 50 free and 100 fly, in personal-best times of 27.33 seconds and 1:11.35, respectively.

COSTA MESA — Senior Andrew Millian went three for five with two doubles and four RBIs for the Mustangs in an Orange Coast League eight-inning game Friday.

The Mustangs (15-10, 8-2 in league) can claim the league title with a win at home against second-place Calvary Chapel (7-3 in league) on Monday at 3:15 p.m.

Brian Waldron went two for three with two runs and Tyler Peterson was two for two for Costa Mesa.

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior RJ D’Cruz got the Sailors’ lone hit in a Sunset League game Friday.

D’Cruz got on board with an infield single in the first inning against Los Alamitos senior starter Beau Wright, who’s bound for UC Irvine.

D’Cruz (3-6) went five innings, striking out nine and walking two. He gave up three earned runs.

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Rex Nelson won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events and was one of several CIF qualifiers for the Newport Harbor High boys’ and girls’ teams that both finished fifth Friday at Huntington Beach High.

Nelson went 4 minutes, 24.71 seconds in the 1,600 and 9:25.04 in the 3,200.

Other Newport boys who qualified for next week’s CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries included, Mike Puncel (third in the 1,600 in 4:26.81), Michael Taylor (fourth in the 3,200 in 9:33.86), Jake Dawson (fifth in the 3,200 in 9:334.78), Josh George (sixth in the pole vault in 13 feet, 4 inches), Cecil Whiteside (third in the shot put in 51-2), Nate Talbott (second in the discus in 172-9).

Nelson (fourth in 1:58.41) and Puncel (sixth in 1:59.29) also qualified in the 800. Whiteside also qualified in the discus, taking third (163-3.

Murphy Hitchcock, Coby Peterson, Joel Betonte and Bucko Theriot qualified in the 1,600 relay, taking third in 3:26.29.

On the girls’ side, Melissa Hancock won the high jump (5-3).

Hancock qualified for the CIF Division II preliminaries. Others include Carly Ruiz in the high jump (tied for third, 4-9), Kirby Burnham in the 100-meter hurdles (third, 16.61 seconds) and Cassidy Gayner in the 300 hurdles (third, 47.27).

In the 3,200, three runners qualified. Sophia Ditty was second at 10:51.19, followed by Erica Pearson (fourth, 11:04.18) and Desiree Alexander (fifth, 11:06.62). The 1,600 relay team, made up of Gayner, Stephanie Badum, Stephanie Case and Lillie Berry, was third in 4:05.61.

Pacific Coast League finals

LAGUNA HILLS — Corona del Mar High senior Shelby Buckley and junior Blaine Bolus each were named athlete of the meet for their respective girls’ and boys’ competitions at the Pacific Coast League championships Friday.

Coach Bill Sumner said the girls won a league title for the eighth straight year, and the boys finished third. Next is the CIF Southern Section Division III preliminaries.

Buckley won the 800-meter event and anchored the 1,600-meter relay winning team.

Bolus won the long jump and triple jump events. He finished second in the high jump and anchored the mile relay team, which finished second.
