COSTA MESA — Ryan Sheeks went four for five and scored three runs as the Pirates closed out Orange Empire Conference play with a come-from-behind win Friday.

OCC finished 14-7 in conference, good for second place behind Santa Ana. The Pirates (30-13-1) will learn of their playoff seeding when the pairings are released Sunday.

Jourdan Watanabe and Kyle Muhlsteff each went three for five with two RBIs and one run scored.

Matt Hauser went five innings, giving up one run and four hits to improve to 7-1.

SANTA BARBARA — Orange Coast College freshmen Brittany Bass and Brittnie Furuvald both qualified for the state championships Friday at Santa Barbara City College.

Bass defeated Brittany Newsom of Santa Barbara, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in the Round of 16, while Furuvald got by Katie O’Leary of Bakersfield, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), qualifying both for state.

Bass also defeated Annika You of Cerritos in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-3, while Furuvald lost to Erina Hung of Saddleback, 6-0, 6-0. The semifinals and finals are today, with No. 4-seeded Bass facing top-seeded Lorena Zago of College of the Desert.

In doubles, No. 2-seeded Bass and Furuvald defeated a Cuyumaca team, 6-0, 6-2, before getting by a Grossmont team, 6-4, 6-2. The Pirates’ Evelyn Wallace, a Costa Mesa High product, and Kalin Eshelman fell in the Round of 16, 6-2, 6-0.

Bass and Furuvald will play a No. 6-seeded College of the Desert team today at 1 p.m.

Orange Coast also plays host to the final of the Southern California team regional on Tuesday at 2 p.m., against Grossmont. The winner will advance to the team state championship at Long Beach State on Thursday.
