HUNTINGTON BEACH OPEN
TWO LOCALS ADVANCE
HUNTINGTON BEACH — A pair of players with local ties advanced through four rounds of qualifying Thursday to make their respective men’s and women’s main draw, which begins today at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Huntington Beach Open.
Newport Harbor High product Ty Tramblie, teamed with Mike Morrison of Encinitas, swept four opponents to earn a berth in the main draw, and will meet Matt Olson of Rancho Santa Fe and Kevin Wong of Honolulu, in today’s winner’s bracket first round.
Former UC Irvine standout Whitney Pavlik teamed with Jennifer Snyder of Long Beach to win four qualifying matches to advance. One of those wins came over Pavlik’s former UCI teammate, Keegan Featherstone, who was teamed with Costa Mesa resident Ashley Groothuis.
Pavlik and Snyder topped Featherstone-Groothuis, 21-13, 21-12, in a third-round qualifying match and will face Angela Lewis and Priscilla Lima in the winner’s bracket first round
Former UCI All-American Kelly Wing, teamed with Olivia Waldowski of Irvine, lost a women’s second-round qualifying match.
Newport Beach resident John Pecora and partner Darin McBain of Irvine won two men’s qualifying matches, before falling in the third round.
Former Newport Harbor High standout Erik Perrine, playing with Griffin Cogorno of Newport Coast, won a first-round men’s qualifying match, before being eliminated in the second round.
Soeren Schneider, a former Orange Coast College player and coach who resides in Costa Mesa, teamed with Shigetomo Sakagawa to advance to the second round of men’s qualifying.
John Braunstein of Costa Mesa and Ed Lunnen of Huntington Beach, also got past the first round of men’s qualifying, only to lose in the second round. Costa Mesa resident Josh Goodman and his partner, Steven Garner of Huntington Beach, lost in the first round of men’s qualifying.
