Furnishings settles outside

Waterfront Furnishings, a boutique store that faced possible eviction from South Coast Home Furnishings Centre, will move out at the end of the month after attorneys reached an agreement, co-owner Don Logan said.

The shop, which has struggled to attract customers since opening at the Costa Mesa shopping center in August, received an eviction notice from the property’s owners after failing to pay rent on time. Logan attempted to fight the eviction in court by subpoenaing almost every other shop owner in the center to testify on his behalf.

The trial was set to begin Thursday, but attorneys for Logan and South Coast Home Furnishings Centre reached a settlement out of court.

Logan and attorney Gregory Grantham would not discuss the terms of the agreement, but said Waterfront Furnishings would move out of the center at the end of January.

“I have mixed emotions with regard to the final results, but I’m moving out,†Logan said.

He said he planned to reopen his store elsewhere and was considering the Cedros Design District in Solana Beach as his top choice.

Logan, who relocated his shop from Hermosa Beach to Costa Mesa, quickly fell out with the Furnishings Centre’s management after moving in.

Last fall, he created his own merchants association to advertise for himself and other tenants, which he said the property’s owners had not done adequately. When the center gave Logan his eviction notice, he and other tenants said they believed it was a retaliatory move.
