Orange Coast Classic

COSTA MESA — Orange Coast College freshman Crystal Reed won the women’s 5,000-meter race in 19 minutes, 11.5 seconds to pace the six-time defending champion Pirates to the women’s team title Saturday at Fairview Park.

Cassie Mitchell was second (20:10.3), Tiffany Hannah was fourth (20:35.3), Ariana Espinoza was seventh (20:52.2) and Senayt Asrat was eighth (20:52.9) to lead the winners, whose 22 team points was 50 better than co-runners-up Cerritos and Southwestern.

Other OCC runners in the top 30 were: Jillian Lopez (14th in 21:30.5), Claire Fleming (22nd, 22:01.6), Joanna Abarca (26th, 22:06.4) and Elena Lopez (27th, 22:16.7).

The OCC men used four top-20 point-earners to place third with 76 points, behind San Bernardino Valley (25) and Antelope Valley (69).

OCC’s Brandon Babiracki was second with a time of 20:38.8, nearly 31 seconds behind winner Carlos Perez from San Bernardino Valley.

Jorge Torres (12th in 21:34.1), Preston Switzer (18th, 21:49.4), Cooper Meacham (21st, 22:08.0) and Sean Connor (26th, 22:28.3) also led the way for the Pirates.

Also in the top 30 for OCC were James Ko (28th, 22:44.2) and Chris Ponce (29th, 22:46.2).

Next up for the Pirates will be the UC Riverside Invitational, Saturday at 7:30 a.m.

Vanguard 1, Westmont 0

COSTA MESA — Freshman Danielle Dintino converted an assist from senior Cassanda Rodeiro in teh 93rd minute in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener Saturday at Vanguard.

Jillian Foss made five saves for the No. 16-ranked Lions (6-1-1), who were outshot, 11-8, by the Warriors (3-4).

Westmont 2, Vanguard 1

COSTA MESA – The Lions’ Tomislav Colic scored in the 19th minute for a 1-1 tie, but the NAIA’s 16th-ranked Warriors got the game-winner in the 64th in the Golden West League opener for both teams Saturday.

Vanguard (5-2), ranked No. 20 in the NAIA, outshot Westmont, 8-6. Johnny Alcaraz and Anthony Stranz scored for the Warriors.

UCLA 12, UC Irvine 11 (3 OT)

LOS ANGELES — Justin Johnson scored the game-winning goal 1:31 into sudden-victory overtime to lift the No. 3-ranked Bruins in the nonconference game Saturday at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.

Senior Tim Hutten put No. 6-ranked UCI up, 9-7, with back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter. Hutten led all scorers with seven goals.

Scott Davidson’s fifth goal with 2:21 left cut the deficit to 9-8 and Ben Hohl tied it with 42 seconds left in regulation.

UCI fell to 4-3, while UCLA improved to 8-1.

Freshman Brandon Johnson added a pair of goals for UCI and senior goalie Matt Garcia had 10 saves.

Chay Lapin recorded 12 saves for the Bruins.

The Anteaters travel to Long Beach State Thursday at 7 p.m.
