Huntington 14, Brea 7
Treavon Coley raced 75 yards for the winning touchdown in the closing seconds as the Green Chargers rallied past the Bengals in a penalty-marred game.
Coley’s winning run came moments after a 60-yard scoring run with 53 seconds left was negated by an offensive penalty.
Tyler Macleod provided the conversion to cap the scoring.
Neither team was able to score in the first half, but Huntington managed to take a 6-0 lead midway through the third quarter on a touchdown pass from Brodie Barton to Andrew Bogard. In the fourth quarter, Brea scored on a sweep on a fourth-down run and added the conversion to take a 7-6 lead.
Huntington had a chance to retake the lead on its next possession but after runs by Barton, Coley and Trevor Borkowski moved the ball down to the Brea eight-yard line, the drive stalled.
The Green Chargers defense of Peter Russo, Aaron Vargas, Andrew Mickle, Trevor Jackson, Matt Oakley, Charles Mendola, Sam Doxakis, Roman Smith and Darin Preece held Brea on its ensuing drive and gave its offense one final possession.
Russo intercepted a Brea pass on the final play of the game to seal the victory.
The undefeated Green Chargers play an 11 a.m. game Saturday against the Costa Mesa Green Mustangs at Costa Mesa High.
Cypress 24, Huntington 0
Cypress scored its first touchdown last in the first half, then added two late touchdowns in the fourth quarter, to spoil the home opener for the Gold Chargers.
Down 8-0, the Gold Chargers mounted a serious scoring drive in the second half, thanks to the running of Brandon Lien and the pass-catch combo of quarterback Colin Kearon and running back Chad Davis.
They reached the Cypress eight-yard line but could not reach the end zone in four plays.
