Who’s the starting QB?

As Edison prepared this week to play the first of several upcoming showdowns on its 2007 football schedule, one burning question needed to be answered: Who will start at quarterback Friday?

Whoever gets the nod will have to be at his best as Servite comes to town for a key county clash between CIF Pac-5 Division top 10 teams.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Orange Coast College.

“We have three days to figure that out,” Edison Coach Dave White said Monday, of his quarterbacking dilemma.

Fourth-ranked Edison (3-0) didn’t have the problem at the outset of the season, as UCLA-bound Nick Crissman had the spot locked up again. But Crissman had his appendix removed on Sept. 4 and hasn’t played since. White reported that Crissman says, “he’s ready to go,” but White adds he is still a “question mark.”

Crissman’s replacement, Garrett Heckel, also is unavailable since suffering a high-ankle sprain during a Sept. 10 practice. In replacing Crissman for the San Clemente game on Sept. 7, he rallied Edison to a 26-17 win over the Tritons.

Last Friday at Los Angeles Jordan, sophomore Matt Viles stepped into the starter’s role and delivered a nine of 13 passing performance for 166 yards without an interception in a 45-0 shutout of the Bulldogs. He and senior Trent Burns teamed on a 43-yard touchdown pass, senior Nate Blizzard and sophomore Wade Houston each rushed for a pair of touchdowns, senior Areseo Lakey rushed for Edison’s first touchdown, and Nick Torres booted a 25-yard field goal.

White held out several starters in the game.

In getting its first shutout of the season, the Chargers defense still hasn’t allowed a point in the fourth quarter in three games.

Sixth-ranked Servite has rolled to easy wins in its first two games. First, the Friars snubbed previous Angeles League rival St. Paul, 33-0. They last played on Sept. 8 and scored a 17-7 win over Santiago of Corona.

The Friars have several key weapons, including defensive back/receiver D.J. Shoemate and offensive tackle Matt Kalil, both of whom who have committed to USC.

Junior Greg Portis leads the Servite rushing attack.

“They’re tough, as always, and I’m sure that they’re chomping at the bit to get back at us,” said White, whose Chargers have won four-straight against the Friars since a 7-0 Servite win in 2003. “There’s been some good games in this rivalry.”

The Chargers twice defeated the Friars last year, including once in the postseason.

Last year’s scores: Chargers 28, Friars 13; Chargers 28, Friars 21.

Friday’s other games:

Marina (1-1) vs. Orange (1-1)

(at El Modena High, 7 p.m.)

Marina and first-year head coach Dan Petrone both recorded their first wins last week by rallying past visiting Westminster on Friday, 14-13. The Vikings trailed 13-0 but a 28-yard touchdown pass from Tim Atencio to Jimmy Irwin in the final six seconds of the first half capped a two-minute drill and made it a 13-7 game. Midway through the fourth quarter, senior defensive back Brad Thompson scored on a 45-yard interception return to tie the score, then Chase Robinson hit the extra-point that provided the margin of difference.

Westminster’s final drive of the game ended in a botched field goal attempt.

The win ended Marina’s six-game losing streak.

“It was a great win for our boys and the program,” Petrone said.

“We got down early in the game but the kids just battled back and weren’t going to give up. It’s a big win but we still need to cut down on the mistakes we’ve made in our first two games.”

Orange picked up its first win of the season last Friday by outscoring host Magnolia, 48-34. Dejon Deason rushed for more than 200 yards in the first half and finished with 281 yards and four touchdowns.

The Panthers defense has been suspect in two games, giving up an average of 40 points per game.

Orange dropped its season opener to El Modena, 47-12.

“They’ll be similar, in a sense, to Westminster in that they’ll try to establish the run,” Petrone said. “They definitely have some good athletes. They had an off-week against El Modena but showed how well they could run in their win over Magnolia.”

Last year’s score: Panthers 42, Vikings 27

Century (0-2) vs. Ocean View (1-1)

(at Ocean View High, 7 p.m.)

Ocean View ran into a solid team in University, which had its rushing game in high-gear and posted a 42-14 win over the visiting Seahawks.

Dana Maley and Phillip Rodriguez teamed on a 27-yard touchdown pass play and Kenny Tarpley rushed for a score for Ocean View.

Century has scored just 10 points in two games, losses to Sonora (17-3) and Santa Ana (26-7).

Last year’s score: Seahawks 24, Centurions 6

Saturday’s game:

Long Beach Jordan (2-0) vs. Huntington Beach (1-1)

(at Huntington Beach High, 6 p.m.)

Huntington Beach hasn’t played since posting a 35-20 win at Los Amigos on Sept. 7. Jordan will be the Oilers’ second opponent this season to hail from Long Beach and the Moore League: They opened the season on Aug. 31 with a 22-10 loss at Millikan.

The Jordan Panthers have started the season 2-0 by winning two close games over Lynwood (14-12) and Diamond Bar (17-16). They rushed for more than 300 yards in the win over Diamond Bar.

Leading ball carrier Tylik Carter is averaging six yards per carry and 155 yards per game.

Last year’s score: Oilers 27, Panthers 8.
