Santa Ana Tournament

SANTA ANA – Orange Coast College freshman setter Emily Lyon earned Most Valuable Player honors, as she helped lead the Pirates to the tournament championship for the fourth straight year.

Sophomore Jacqi Reed and freshman Deirdre Fiapai, both outside hitters, were named to the all-tournament team.

OCC defeated College of the Desert, 30-23, in the championship game.

The tournament’s pool play was best-of-three format and the playoff-bracket play was a one-game match.

The Pirates went undefeated in pool play Friday.

They beat Mt. San Antonio, 30-19, in the semifinals, and Saddleback, 30-14, in the quarterfinals.

Arizona Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – Outside hitters Lauren Kellerman and Kari Pestolesi posted 16 kills each as UC Irvine swept Cal State Bakersfield, 30-23, 30-25, 30-26, Saturday.

Pestolesi, a freshman, also had 14 digs and junior libero Devon Sutherland led the Anteaters (10-3) with 17.

Sophomore setter Taryn Robertson amassed 37 assists for UCI.

San Diego Christian

COSTA MESA — Genene Hill had a team-high 13 kills to help the No. 19-ranked Lions earn a 30-24, 30-20, 30-28 sweep Saturday.

Vanuard improved to 2-2, while San Diego Christian fell to 0-4.

Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO – Vanguard junior Rebecca Sopp won the women’s open with her best time on the Balboa Park 5K course in 19 minutes, 9 seconds.

That was 17 seconds faster than last year and it was good enough to keep her ahead of the field that included 80 runners. Sopp helped the Lions finish fourth among nine schools.

Lions junior Gina Attard was 15th in 20:45, and sophomore Kelsie Davis was 18th in 20:48.

On the men’s side, Vanguard senior Jason Valenzuela finished 17th in 26:21 on the 8K course, as the Lions finished ninth.

Lions senior Humberto Rojas, an Estancia High product, was 24th in 26:29.

NorCal Tournament

ORINDA, Calif. — UC Irvine defeated Navy, 13-12, then lost, 11-9, in overtime to Stanford Saturday to fall into today’s consolation semifinals against Long Beach State at Cal.

Senior Tim Hutten scored five goals in each game to lead the Anteaters (2-1), who received four combined goals from senior Colin Mello.

Stanford, coached by former Corona del Mar High head man John Vargas, improved to 3-0.

LA MIRADA — Freshman Danielle Dintino’s hat trick helped the Lions prevail in the nonconference match at Saturday in the Biola Tournament at Biola University.

All three goals were unassisted for Dintino, who opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, then added on in the 77th minute and the 84th minute.

Sophomore goalie Jillian Foss made two saves to earn the shutout, Vanguard’s second straight and third of the season.

Vanguard improved to 5-1-1, dropping Illinois-based Trinity to 3-4.

LA MIRADA — The No. 14-ranked Lions improved to 5-1-0 as Christopher Lieva scored both goals in the Biola Tournament Saturday at Biola.

Lieva’s first goal came in the fifth minute, while the second was in the 42nd minute to put the Lions on top, 2-0. Both goals were unassisted.

Trever Herrera had one save for Vangaurd.

Trinity International, from Illinois, fell to 0-6-1.
