Stanley Cup displayed at Newport Sports Museum
You would have thought royalty was inside, judging by the line stretching out of the building.
In fact there was — at least for hockey fans — as Lord Stanley’s Cup paid a visit to the Newport Sports Museum Friday for a couple of hours.
The trophy has been around for 115 years, originally called the Challenger Cup and introduced in 1893, it was changed to the Stanley Cup in the early 20th century.
The Ducks’ players’ names will be engraved on the cup next week in Ottawa.
“It’s so great to see the Ducks win one of the oldest trophies in sports,” said 10-year-old Nick Wood.
Locals capitalized on their brief chance to spend time with the Cup. Ducks players each had one day with it, and their tales can be found online at www.hhof.com.
