Arizona Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz . — UC Irvine fell to the host Wildcats, 30-27, 30-24, 31-33, 30-17, in the final match of the first day Friday evening.

Junior outside hitter Lauren Kellerman had 17 kills to pace the Anteaters, who received 15 from freshman outside hitter Kari Pesolesi and 11 from senior middle blocker Kristin Kelley.

Sophomore setter Taryn Robertson added 44 assists and Devon Sutherland produced a team-high 15 digs for the Anteaters (9-3).

But Randy Goodenough pounded a match-high 25 kills, while Wildcats Brooke Burungrud and Tiffany Owens contributed 13 and 10, respectively, to help Arizona improve to 9-2.

Kellerman added 10 digs.

Earlier Friday, UCI swept Davidson, 30-15, 30-17, 30-28, behind a team-high 12 kills from Kellerman, who hit .500 and contributed a career-high six service aces.

Sutherland led all players with 16 digs while setter Robertson dished out 34 assists for the winners.

Middle blocker Kelley totaled five blocks and the Anteaters posted a season-high 10 aces.

Davidson saw its record fall to 5-5.

Orange Coast def. Glendale

SANTA ANA — Orange Coast swept Glendale, 30-16, 30-14, 30-24 to improve their record to 3-1 Friday.

The Pirates were lead by Jacqi Reed with 19 kills, Kayla Carter with 17 digs and Emily Lyon with 47 assists on the night.

Sacramento State 1

IRVINE — Juniors Rafael Macedo, T.J. Terrazas and Matt Murphy all scored second-half goals to help the host Anteaters erase a 1-0 deficit in the nonconference match Friday night.

Macedo scored in the 49th minute to tie the score, then Terrazas converted an assist from Murphy to put UCI (4-0) on top to stay in the 56th minute.

Freshman goalie Pat Barton made two saves to help drop Sacramento State to 0-5.

Freshman Indar Smith and senior Brandon Foster were also credited with assists for Coach George Kuntz’s winners.

Orange Coast 1, Cerritos 1

NORWALK — The host Falcons scored late in the first half to erase a 1-0 deficit in the nonconference game Friday.

Sophomore Curtis Taniguchi converted an assist from freshman Brian Siemonsma in the fifth minute to put the Pirates (3-1-2) on top.

Sophomore Joey Balbas made nine saves for OCC, while Diego Millan had eight for the Falcons (5-2-2).

Fullerton 3, Orange Coast 3

SANTA ANA — In an Orange Empire Conference match on Friday, the Pirates let their lead slip away in the early part of the second half.

The Pirates’ Jamie Smith scored in the seventh minute and then again in the eighth to give them a 2-0 lead.

Avery Williams scored in the 28th minute to put Orange Coast up 3-2, a lead that would not stand.

The Pirates are now 0-3-1 (0-1-1).

UC Irvine 6, Gardner-Webb 0

IRVINE — The UC Irvine Anteaters improve to 4-1 after beating Gardner-Webb (2-3) Friday and posting their fourth straight shutout.

The Anteaters scored six goals on 11 shots.

Senior Kim Horn scored twice for Irvine, while Tanya Taylor, Kate Berrini, Frankee Kelly, and Christina Gorospe each added a goal in the win.

Freshman Danielle de Seriere, who recorded two saves, and junior Erin Henry with three, combined in goal for the shutout.
