University women to honor four leaders

The American Association of University Women of Laguna Beach will honor four of Laguna’s women leaders at its ninth annual Leadership Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 8, at Tivoli Too, 777 Laguna Canyon Road.

Honorees this year are Susie Campbell for positive social change, Bobbi Cox for community service, Kim Maxwell for youth advocacy, and Dr. Joanne Culverhouse for education.

Campbell, a U.S. Coast Guard certified sea captain, serves through the Laguna Beach Resource Center, the Laguna Beach High School Rotary Interact Club, Casa Hogar Orphanage outside Ensenada, and at the same time teaches women and girls of Laguna Beach survival and life skills by way of her 34-foot sailboat, Campbell’s Sloop, donating all her instructional fees to the needy.

Cox was chairwoman of the Laguna Beach Arts Commission in the early 1990s, served on the Board of the Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce and founded its Community Leadership Luncheon, helped found the Community Art Project, and has recently donated $50,000 matched by the Hearts of Montage for a dance studio at the new Laguna Beach Senior Center.

Maxwell, executive director of Laguna Beach Boys & Girls Club, has guided the organization through its largest growth period of its history. The Capital Campaign of $3.5 million created a facility that serves more than 1,300 youth annually and 350-plus children daily. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with Roxanna Ward entertaining. Dinner and the program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Past AAUW president Carol Reynolds will emcee.

Assistance League helps Pendleton children

“Chapters for Children,” a philanthropic project of the Laguna Beach Assistance League, once again participated in providing back-to-school clothes for more than 400 Camp Pendleton children in August. The local chapter joins with other Southern California chapters in this endeavor, with volunteers from each chapter on hand to help the youngsters with their clothing selections.
