Tournament

COSTA MESA — Sage Hill School won the eight-team tournament at Orange Coast College, defeating El Dorado, 9-9, (35-34 on games) in the final.

The Lightning also defeated Rosary, 5-1, Capistrano Valley Christian, 6-0, and Temecula Valley, 5-1, to win their flight in the tournament. The First-Serve Tournament matches feature six eight-game pro-sets, three singles and three doubles.

Sage Hill’s Jaclyn Smrecek and Laney Tucker each won sets in the final against El Dorado, as did the doubles team of Sarah Choi and Allyson Smart.

The Lightning face Mater Dei on Monday at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

Newport Harbor

LAGUNA HILLS — The Sailors boys had a third-place team time of 1 hour, 21 minutes, 7 seconds Saturday at the 24th annual event, which divides its races by class and division.

Rex Nelson and Mike Puncel were sixth and seventh, respectively, for the Sailors in the Division II senior boys’ race in 15 minutes, 46 seconds and 15:47. They were followed in that race by teammates Carlo Urquidez in 14th (16:45) and Murphy Hitchcock in 21st (16:55).

Jake Dawson’s time of 16:17 was good for fifth in the Division II junior boys’ race, followed by Michael Taylor in ninth (16:32) and Scott Figueroa in 13th (16:46). Alex Crawford (15th, 16:50), Trent Casillas (19th, 16:58) and Saul De La Rosa (20th, 17:05) all had top-10 finishes in the same race.

Alex Jolly was second in the Division II freshman boys’ race, finishing in 17:45.

The Harbor girls’ finished 11th with a team time of 1:39:44. Sophia Ditty finished third in the senior girls’ Division II race in 19:15. Kelly DeYoung was 11th in 20:08 and Stephanie Case 17th in 20:30.

Erica Pearson took third among juniors in 19:22. Tori Sarris was seventh (20:47) among freshmen, and Eva Nelson (15th in 20:25), Patti Moddlemog (16th in 20:27) and Coleen Mead (18th in 20:32) competed on the sophomore level for the Sailors, who will run in the Woodbridge Invitational Saturday.

Corona del Mar

LAGUNA HILLS — The CdM girls finished fourth overall in the season-opening meet Saturday .Corona del Mar, the defending Division III state champion which had the fastest girls’ team time in the two previous years at Laguna Hills, finished this year with a team time of 1:38.03. That put CdM fourth behind Mira Costa, Serrano and Chaparral.

Shelby Buckley and Allison Damon finished one-two in the Division III senior girls’ race. Buckley won the race with a time of 19:02 on the three-mile course, and Damon followed in second with her time of 19:10.

The Sea Kings almost did the same thing in the Division III senior boys’ race, which was won by CdM’s Richard Demarco (16:26). Teammate James McKennon was third in 16:32.

Laura Bilder and Kim Condino each placed high in the Division III junior girls’ race, with Bilder in ninth (20:29) and Condino in 11th (20:41).

CdM also took three of the top five spots in the Division III sophomore girls’ race, with Marisa Cummings in second in 19:52, Sarah Keddington in third in 19:58 and Kyla Winkle in fifth in 20:11.

CdM’s Sarah Craig won the Division III freshman girls’ race in 20:01, followed by teammates Amanda Bastien in fourth (20:20) and Taylor Hebb in sixth (20:40).

In the sophomore boys’ race, the Sea Kings’ Sebastien Welch was ninth in 17:04.

Sage Hill

LAGUNA HILLS — Sean McElroy and Cait Williamson each had fourth-place finishes for their class and division in the three-mile race.

McElroy was fourth in the Division III senior boys’ race in 16:46, while Williamson’s time of 20:02 in the Division III junior girls’ race was also good for fourth.

Lion Wintemute was 15th in the Division III sophomore boys’ race in 18:00, and Jackie Dion was 25th in the sophomore girls’ race in 22:27.

“We had a good day,” Lightning Coach Nate Miller said. “For a lot of our kids, it was their first meet ever.”

Estancia, Costa Mesa

LAGUNA HILLS — Eagles junior Fernando Orozco was fourth in the Division III junior boys’ race, finishing in 16:39. Teammate Wes Barloon (17:24) followed in 11th.

In the Division III sophomore boys’ race, Jorge Martin was a strong fifth for Estancia.

Senior Eunice Rodriquez was ninth in the Division III senior girls’ race, finishing in 21:16. Alexa Aguilar was 13th in the Division III junior girls’ race (20:49), followed by Sindy Ramirez in 20th (21:38).

Alejandra Peralta took 22nd in the Division III sophomore girls’ race in 22:10.

The Costa Mesa boys finished 48th overall.

Chris Weisz Tournament

TUSTIN — Skyler Twohig scored 16 goals to help Costa Mesa High go 2-1 on the final day of consolation at Tustin High Saturday.

The Mustangs (3-2) finished 13th in the 24-team tournament, Costa Mesa Coach Justin Taylor said.

Twohig scored seven goals in a 17-7 victory over Bolsa Grande. He then had five goals in the Mustangs’ 11-4 win over La Salle of Pasadena. Twohig has scored 26 goals in Mesa’s five games.

He had four when the Mustangs opened the day with a 19-6 setback to Montebello.

Cody Serrano and Sam Edman each scored seven goals in the three games, while Dustin Serrano recorded 12 total steals.
