UC Irvine/Nike Invitational

IRVINE — UC Irvine improved to 8-2 with victories Saturday over Southern Mississippi and William & Mary.

The Anteaters handled William & Mary 30-23, 30-27, 30-21 Saturday night, after sweeping Southern Mississippi, 30-19, 30-26. 30-26, in the afternoon. Both matches were at Crawford Court.

UCI’s Chelsea Ellis and Kristin Kelley earned all-tournament honors.

Lauren Kellerman tallied 27 kills in the two matches and setter Taryn Robertson amassed 92 total assists and 15 digs.

Against William & Mary, Kelley produced six block assists while putting away 14 kills.

Against Southern Mississippi, UCI hit .330 as a team, led by freshman outside hitter Kari Pestolesi, who collected 16 kills.

Asics/UCI Invitational

IRVINE — The UC Irvine women’s team opened the season by winning the title Saturday at the Anteater Recreation Center Fields.

UCI finished with 41 points, 41 ahead of runner-up Loyola Marymount.

The UC Irvine men’s team finished eighth with 206 points, led by Colin Hacker, who finished 15th among 195 runners with a time of 25 minutes, 8.40 seconds, over the 8,000-meter course.

For the UCI women, junior Laura Olvera was second among 123 runners, completing the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 51.50 seconds.

UCI’s Candice Proctor (fourth in 18:02.20), Samantha Costantini (sixth in 18:14.50), Sara Mickelson (13th in 18:32.90), Amber Gordon (16th in 18:45.20), Kendall Bruton (20th in 18:54.60) and Katherine Nelson (22nd in 18:55.60) rounded out the Anteaters’ top seven.

Laura Mickelson of Loyola Marymount was the individual champion in 17:27.70.

For the men, Sky Johnston (23rd in 25:33.40) and Rusty Whisman (48th in 26:20.20) cracked the top 50 for UCI.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Evan Anderson won the race in 24:34.10, helping the Mustangs win the team title with 39 points.
