UCI 18, Cal Baptist 7

RIVERSIDE — Seniors Cole Bitter and Tim Hutten scored six and five goals, respectively, for the Anteaters in the nonconference season opener Friday.

Bitter and Hutten, both coming off redshirt seasons, helped UCI seize a 12-5 halftime lead on its way to the easy win.

Senior Colin Mello added three goals for the Anteaters, who received 11 saves from senior Matt Garcia.

SAN BERNARDINO — Jacqueline Reed had 18 kills and eight digs as the visiting Pirates won, 19-30, 30-22, 30-24, 30-22, Friday in a nonconference match.

Rebecca Lowe had eight kills for Orange Coast(1-1), and setter Emily Lyon added 35 assists.

Brooke Goodyear and Sebastiana Lopez each had 13 kills for San Bernardino Valley (0-3).

COSTA MESA — The Pirates couldn’t hold an early 2-0 lead in the nonconference match Friday at OCC.

OCC (2-1-1) scored the game’s first goal in the 21st minute when Curtis Tanaguchi scored on Matt Blank’s assist. Five minutes later, Jerred Balbas scored a header off teammate John Shinjo’s corner kick.

But Long Beach (1-0-3) scored goals in the 65th and 75th minutes to salvage the tie.

Joey Balbas made seven saves for OCC, which plays host to Glendale on Tuesday in another nonconference match.

UC Irvine 2, Utah State 0

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Sophomore Kate Berrini scored both goals to help the Anteaters improve to 2-1 in a game at the High Altitude Tournament at Lumberjack Stadium on the campus of Northern Arizona University Friday.

Berrini scored her second goal of the season in the 34th minute, then finalized the scoring in the 69th minute, converting an assist from sophomore Caty Cope.

UCI freshman goalkeeper Danielle de Seriere had six saves to earn her second straight shutout. She has played in all three UCI matches this season and has not allowed a goal.

The Anteaters conclude tournament play Sunday, when they Liberty at 11 a.m.

Vanguard 3, Cedarville 2

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — The No. 24-ranked Lions overcame a 2-0 deficit to prevail in the Bethel Tournament Friday.

Sem Lopez scored on a penalty kick to put Vanguard on the scoreboard in the 55th minute.

Lopez then earned an assist on Jeff Cocca’s goal in the 70th minute.

Dane Gallion scored the game-winner in the 80th minute on an assist by Andrew Elliott and Tom Culver to help Vanguard improve to 3-0.

Vanguard, which had not allowed a goal all season, fell behind when Cedarville (Ohio) scored in the 32nd minute, then added another in the 38th minute.

Vanguard goalies Kyle Pearsall (first half) and Trevor Herrerra (second half) had two and five saves, respectively.

Vanguard had 18 shots to Cedarville’s nine, forcing Cedarville ‘keeper John Norton to make 14 saves.

Vanguard meets host Bethel College today.

Orange Coast 1

WALNUT — Sarah Humphries scored in the 35th minute to knot the score at 1-1, but the host Mounties scored just before halftime, then pulled away in the second half of the nonconference game Friday.

Heather Brystom had seven saves for OCC, which fell to 0-3.

The Pirates open Orange Empire Conference play Tuesday at Saddleback.

Orange Empire Conference preview meet

FULLERTON — The Orange Coast College women won the meet at Craig Park on Friday, finishing with 19 points and taking five of the first six places.

The OCC men finished third.

For the women’s race, the Pirates’ Crystal Reed was first on the 3.076-mile course in 16 minutes, 51.1 seconds. Teammate Cassie Mitchell was third in 18:25.

OCC’s Ariana Espinoza was fourth in 19:00.80, Tiffany Hanna was fifth in 19:04.7 and Senayt Asrat was sixth in 19:06.3.

Orange Coast finished third on the men’s side with its 55 points, behind champion Santa Ana (44) and Riverside (53). But the Pirates’ Brandon Babiracki was first on the four-mile course in 20:33.4, which was nearly four seconds ahead of second-place Jersain Torres of Santa Ana.

OCC’s Jorge Torres was third in 21:21.6, Cooper Meacham placed 11th in 21:45.1, Preston Switzer was 19th in 22:18.4 and Sean Connor took 23rd in 22:57.8.

The Pirates cross country teams will be at the Fresno Invitational on Sept. 15.
