Unitarians to honor Munro in Labor service

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Laguna Beach will once again follow its tradition remembering those in the labor movement on the Sunday before Labor Day. This yearly tradition serves a two-fold purpose.

The first is to honor the experiences of some of the older members of the Fellowship and our greater community with direct ties to the labor movement. The second is to remind the younger generation of the workers who made great sacrifices to secure the right to collectively bargain for better working conditions.

Jean Raun will speak on “Speaking Out for Justice.”

This year UUFLB will be highlighting the contributions of the late Evelyn Munro, a Laguna Beach resident and one of the heroines of the movement. Munro walked picket lines and organized tenant farmers in America’s South. The responsive reading Munro wrote, which was read at the first annual convention of the tenant farmers union, will be used as part of the UU service.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Laguna Beach, 429 Cypress, Laguna Beach.

For more information on this service and the labor contributions of Munro, contact Raun at (949) 350-1453 or lagunatic. [email protected]
