UCI’s Gorgen absorbs tough-luck loss to Cuba
Gorgen, however, absorbed the loss to fall to 1-1 for the national team, as an American error led to two unearned runs in Cuba’s 8-2 win.
Gorgen surrendered six hits before being relieved by Josh Romanski, who was charged with five runs, all earned, in two innings.
The Americans will play another set of four games, beginning today against Japan. They are scheduled to have Wednesday off, then play consecutive games against Netherlands, Chinese Taipai and Cuba. The final is scheduled Aug. 12.
Team USA had six hits against three Cuban pitchers, including starter Yulieski Gonzalez, who struck out nine in 7 1/3 innings to earn the victory.
Gorgen pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out eight and allowing three hits against Russia to earn the win in his first start for the national team in a game July 30 in North Carolina.
Gorgen was a third-team All-American after posting a 13-3 record and a 2.83 ERA in ’07.
