Newport polo battles on at Junior Olympics
SAN JOSE — All four Newport Water Polo Foundation teams are still in the girls’ S&R; Sport Junior Olympics Water Polo Championships, although each Newport team lost at least once on Friday.
The Newport under-18 girls defeated Santa Barbara Water Polo Club, 8-7, on Saturday morning, but then suffered an 11-10 shootout loss to an undefeated San Diego Shores team. The Newport under-18s play a geographically close foe, South Irvine, today at 8 a.m.
The NWPF under-16s beat Carlsbad, 7-5, before falling to Diablo, 16-3. Newport plays Stanford Red today at 8:50 a.m.
The Newport under-14 girls had a similar day, getting a big win over Diablo, 6-5, to win their pool before losing to SoCal, 5-4. Newport plays NSD Stars today at 8:50 a.m.
Meanwhile, the NWPF under-12 girls suffered a tough 6-5 loss to Commerce in their first game Friday, before falling to Santa Barbara Water Polo Club, 10-7.
The under-12s, second in their pool, play against Diablo today at 10:30 a.m.
