Wacholder, Turner 2nd at Hermosa

Wacholder and Turner, seeded third in the women’s tournament, fell to top-seed Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, 21-15, 21-11. The victory gave May-Treanor her 73rd career beach volleyball victory, a new women’s record.

The previous mark was 72 held by Holly McPeak who is still active on the tour.

May-Treanor and Walsh came back from a loss earlier Sunday to No. 5-seed April Ross and Jen Boss to win the tournament.

Wacholder and Turner began the tournament with winner’s bracket victories over No. 30 Krystal Jackson and Tiffany Rodriguez (22-24, 21-18, 15-10) and No. 14 Michelle More and Suzanne Stonebarger (21-17, 22-20) before falling 19-21, 21-17, 12-15 to No. 2 Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs.

In contender’s bracket play, Wacholder and Turner defeated No. 8 Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan, 23-21, 21-19, to move on to the semifinal round. There, they defeated No. 5 Jennifer Boss and April Ross, 21-17, 16-21, 18-16, to earn a shot at the title.

Sunday’s loss by Wacholder and Turner was the second straight to May-Treanor and Walsh in an AVP final: the two teams played for the women’s title at the Glendale Open in Arizona on May 13.

In the men’s final Sunday, No. 1-seed Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser swept No. 4 Jason Ring and Matt Olson, 21-17, 21-12.

Olympian Dain Blanton, also a former volleyball star at Laguna Beach High, and partner Jason Lee entered the tournament seeded No. 20 but tied for ninth-place with a 3-1 record.

The AVP Crocs Tour continues today through Sunday with a first-time tournament, the Louisville Open in Kentucky.

Former Laguna Beach High School standout Rachel Wacholder and her playing partner, Tyra Turner, finished second last Sunday at the AVP Pro Volleyball Tour’s Hermosa Beach Open.
