AROUND TOWN:Newport Relay for Life surpasses $150, 000 mark
The Newport Beach Relay for Life brought in more than $186,000 of donations toward the American Cancer Society, surpassing the goal of $150,000 after 46 teams of nearly 1,000 participants walked in shifts for 24-hours straight. The walk wrapped up around 10 a.m. Sunday on the Newport Harbor High School track.
“We had a huge turn out and I think it was the most successful year yet,” said Peggy Fort a spokeswoman for the event.
The first lap Saturday was taken by scores of cancer survivors. The rest was done in team effort, some walking for several hours straight through the night. The Newport Beach Fire Department provided breakfast Sunday morning as some walkers began their shift and other ended an all-nighter looping the track.
Newport Beach city leaders 23-person team named City Slickers, raised more than $10,000 for the cause, according to the Relay for Life website.
