California Commission on Athletics championshipsSAN MATEO — Orange Coast College freshman Brandon Babiracki finished first in the men’s 1,500 meters and was fourth in the 800 Saturday at College of San Mateo.

Babiracki, who won both events at the Southern California regional meet, as well as the Orange Empire Conference finals, topped the field in the 1,500 with a time of three minutes, 54.08 seconds Saturday to claim the Pirates’ only gold medal.

Babiracki finished more than a second ahead of Dan Napieralski from America River. Babiracki completed the 800 in 1:54.42, more than a second off the pace of Che Ballenter of Merritt, who won the race in 1:53.11.

OCC’s Kyle Peterson finished third in the men’s decathlon (6,205 points), while Brenda Finney was third in the women’s heptathlon (4,032 points).

Rossini was third in the men’s discus throw (160 feet even), while Keneti Faagata was eighth (142-3). Melinda Racliffe was fifth in the women’s 3,000 steeplechase (11:57.33), while Jade Leblanc was fifth in the women’s pole vaunl (10 feet, three-quarters of an inch).

George Prior finished seventh in the men’s javelin throw (178-8) and 10th in the decathlon (5,381 points). Scott Burbach was 10th in the men’s javelin (170-0).

MEN’S GOLF

NCAA West RegionalTEMPE, Ariz. — UC Irvine finished 22nd as a team, while senior Jay Choe was the Anteaters’ top individual finisher in 40th place Saturday at the Arizona State University Karsten Course.

The Anteaters shot two-under-par 286 in the final round to finish with a 54-hole total of one-under 863. Choe shot a one-under 71 Saturday and finished six-under 210.

Freshman John Chin, with a three-under 69 in the final round, placed 81st (par 216).

Sophomore Tim Cha (218) was 93rd, senior Brian Edick (221) was 108th and sophomore Sean Shahi (225 placed 121st.

Edick, the 2007 Big West Player of the Year, led UCI with a 71.85 average this season. Choe finished with a 71.97 average, Chin 72.00, Shahi 72.56 and Cha 73.63.

South Carolina won the regional title at 44-under 820.

BASEBALL

Moorpark 5, Orange Coast 3MISSION VIEJO — The Pirates opened the scoring with a first-inning home run by sophomore first baseman Eric Oliver, but Moorpark seized a five-run lead after seven innings and held on in the elimination game of the Southern California Super Regional playoffs Saturday at Saddleback College.

Oliver, who doubled and scored on Cory Olson’s double to spark a two-run eighth for the Pirates, finished three for four with two runs and one RBI for the Pirates (26-21). Keith Demorgandie started and worked 6 1/3 innings for the Pirates.
