CdM, Sage ready for boys’ tennis quarters

The CIF Southern Section boys’ tennis playoffs have reached the quarter turn, or at least the quarterfinals, a spot which proved to be the ultimate stumbling block last season for Corona del Mar High and Sage Hill School.

Both teams will try to negotiate their way through to the semifinals by winning road matches that begin today at 3 p.m.

CdM (16-3), the No. 4 seed in Division I, visits Peninsula, while Sage Hill, which has lost in the quarterfinals the last four seasons, will try to break that string by upsetting top-seeded Viewpoint of Calabasas.

The Sea Kings have had little trouble getting past their first- and second-round opponents. They dispatched Dos Pueblos, 14-4, in the first round, then handled San Clemente, 15-3, in Saturday’s second round.

CdM defeated Peninsula, 11-7, in a nonleague home match on March 13,

Peninsula has advanced with wins over Agoura, 18-0, and Esperanza, 16-2.

The Lightning (12-11), have come this far by topping Linfield Christian, 16-2, in the first round, then defeating San Gabriel, 12-6, in Saturday’s second round.

Viewpoint, the champion of the Liberty League, has advanced with wins over Mayfair, 16-2, and Silverado, 17-1.
